Noted Author Speaks at Franklin Pierce

Lorene Cary, author of Black Ice, The Price of a Child, and
Pride, spoke at Franklin Pierce University
on Friday, November 2. Cary discussed her writing and issues in education as part of Franklin Pierce's
Individual and Community curriculum.
Her first book, Black Ice, is Cary's memoir describing her experience as the first woman, the first person of color, and a faculty member at a prestigious school in New Hampshire. The book was selected as the Notable Book for 1992 by the American Library Association and is required reading for all first year students at Franklin Pierce.
Cary received her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and was awarded a Thouren Fellowship to study at Sussex University in England. She has been awarded the Doctorate in Humane Letters from Colby College (Maine), Keene State College (New Hampshire), and Chestnut Hill College (Pennsylvania). In 1995 she received a Pew Fellowship, and in 1996, the Shirley Chisholm Award in the Humanities from the Philadelphia Congress of the National Congress of Black Women. Cary is also the 1998 recipient of the Provost's Award for Distinguished Teaching from the University of Pennsylvania.
In addition to being a lecturer in creative writing at the University of Pennsylvania, Cary founded Art Sanctuary in 1998 as a forum for black artists to speak, perform, and teach. The program received Philadelphia Magazine's best series award in 1999.
