Franklin Pierce EASTON, MASS. (April 14, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce softball team suffered a pair of losses to Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon at Gartland Field. The Ravens fell 9-0 in game one before suffering a 3-0 defeat in the nightcap. Stonehill 8, Franklin Pierce 0 (6 innings)
Sophomore Courtney Young (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) led the Stonehill 12-hit attack in game one, hitting 3-4 with a double, two homeruns, three runs scored and two RBI. Classmate Katie Mottau (Woonsocket, R.I./Mount St. Charles) went 3-4 with a homer, two runs scored and three RBI, while junior Lauren Rappoli (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) hit 2-3 with a double and two RBI. Sophomore Yesenia Marrero (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) chipped in with two hits, including a double. Senior Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington), freshman Alyse Bookman (Everett, Mass./Everett), and sophomore Jen Ryan (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) each collected his for Franklin Pierce. Stonehill jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as junior Caitlin Flanagan (Cornwall, N.Y.) connected for an RBI single. The Skyhawks took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning as Young belted a lead-off homerun and Rappoli notched an RBI single. In the fifth frame, Stonehil exploded for four runs capped by a three-run blast by Mottau and an RBI double by Rappoli. The Skyhawks added one more run in the top of the sixth inning on Young’s second round-tripper of the game. Katie Mottau collected her fourth victory of the season for Stonehill, tossing a complete game, three-hitter while striking out six. Freshman Ashley Stewart (Westmoreland, N.H./Monadnock Regional) suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce (0-3). The rookie hurler pitched four-plus innings, yielding five runs on seven hits. Junior Jaime Ippolito (Chelsea, Mass./Savio Prep) led the Stonehill attack in game two, hitting 2-3 with a double, one run scored, and one RBI. Yesenia Marrero was also solid, going 1-2 with one run scored, while sophomore Meghan Sheehy (East Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) registered one hit and one RBI. Sophomore Elaine Matthews (Roslindale, Mass./Archbishop Williams) led the Franklin Pierce four hit attack, hitting a perfect 2-2 with a double, while classmate Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) and junior Nicole Leary (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) chipped in with one hit apiece. After five scoreless innings, Stonehill broke the scoring silence in the top half of the sixth inning with a three run rally capped by an Ippolito RBI double. Courtney Young aided the Skyhawks with an RBI in the inning, while Sheehy connected for a run scoring single. Junior Danielle Mason (Salisbury, Mass./Triton Regional) earned the victory inside the circle for Stonehill (1-6). The veteran slinger scattered four hits in a complete game effort, while striking out five and walking only one. Jacobs suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce, yielding just one earned run on five hits, while striking out four. Franklin Pierce (5-17, 2-10 NE-10) will be in action again on Tuesday as it host Saint Anselm College at 3 p.m. Stonehill College (8-14, 7-5 NE-10) will travel to American International College on Tuesday at 3 p.m. |
