Rallies Past Franklin Pierce RINDGE, N.H. (May 2, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce softball team suffered a pair of losses to Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference action this evening at the Franklin Pierce softball field. Sophomore Nicole Baginski (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) led the Saint Anselm attack in game one, hitting 1-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Freshman Moira McCabe (Brookline, N.H./Bishop Guertin) was also solid with one hit, one run scored, and one RBI, while freshman Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian), sophomore Brittney Birch (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) and senior Jocelyn Savastano (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) chipped in with one hit apiece. Sophomore Jackie Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) led Franklin Pierce with a 2-3 performance, including a double and one run scored, while classmate Elaine Matthews (Roslindale, Mass./Archbishop Williams) hit 1-3 with a triple and one RBI. Freshman Kylie Molinari (Meriden, Conn./Maloney) chipped in with a double. Franklin Pierce opened the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Matthews connected for her second triple of the season to drive home Prybella (double). After being held scoreless through six innings, Saint Anselm registered five runs in the top half of the seventh inning to take a 5-1 advantage. McCabe and Lemire led the Hawk attack with RBI singles, while Savastano notched an RBI sacrifice fly. Sophomore Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce, yielding five runs (three earned) on five hits over seven complete innings, while striking out six. Megan Lemire led Saint Anselm offensively in game two, hitting 2-4 with a double, two runs scored and one RBI. Brittney Birch was also solid with two singles, two runs scored and one RBI, while Jocelyn Savastano finished 1-2 with one run scored and two RBI. Freshman Kristen Tracy (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Walter Panas) was strong for Franklin Pierce in game two, hitting a perfect 2-2 with a double, while Elaine Matthews went 2-3 with two doubles. Freshman Jenna Hunt (Winchendon, Mass./Murdock) hit 1-2 with one RBI while Jackie Prybella and junior Nicole Leary (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) added one hit apiece. Saint Anselm opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with six runs on two hits and five errors. Savastano led the rally with an RBI single, while McCabe notched a single and one run scored. The Hawks added three more runs in the top of the second on RBI singles by Birch and freshman Theresa Foley (Byfield, Mass./Central Catholic) to take a 9-0 lead. Franklin Pierce connected for a single run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Hunt, but Saint Anselm tacked on two more scores over the last three innings to complete the eight run mercy rule victory in the fifth frame. Freshman Lisa Caruso (Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) earned the victory for Saint Anselm, allowing only one run on nine hits over five innings of work. Junior Becky Aalto (Hubbardston, Mass./Gardner) suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce, yielding 11 runs (five earned) on 11 hits over five innings of work. Franklin Pierce concludes its season with an overall record of 9-29, 6-22 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Saint Anselm College concludes its season with an overall record of 13-26, 10-15 in the NE-10. |
