Southern N.H. Tops Franklin Pierce
Ravens fall 8-0 in game one; edged 1-0 in nightcap

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 23, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce softball team suffered a pair of setbacks Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon at Penmen Field. The Ravens endured an 8-0 loss over five innings in game one before being edged 1-0 in the nightcap.

            Senior Felicia Brum (Braintree, Mass./Blue Hills Regional) led the Southern New Hampshire offensive attack, hitting a perfect 3-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Sophomore Ashley Bernstein (Stoughton, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) was also solid for the Penmen, going 2-3 with two runs scored and one RBI, while sophomore Valerie Martins (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) went 2-2 with a double, one run scored, and three RBI. Senior Tara Moriarty (Randolph, Mass./Randolph) chipped in with one hit, one run and one RBI.

            Sophomore Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) and classmate Elaine Matthews (Roslindale, Mass./Archbishop Williams) combined for Franklin Pierce’s two hits, registering one single apiece.

            After two scoreless innings, Southern New Hampshire exploded for six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the third frame. The Penmen opened the inning with three consecutive hits, including an RBI bunt single by Moriarty. Bernstein followed with a single up the middle to plate the second Penmen run, while Brum connected for an RBI single to right field. Lawton continued the Southern New Hampshire rally with an RBI single to left field, before Martins scored on a wild pitch.

            Southern New Hampshire added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to earn the 8-0 mercy rule victory. Martins led the Penmen rally with an RBI double to right field that drove in two runs.

            Courtney Jacobs suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce (6-10), yielding six runs and eight hits over three innings of work. Junior Mary Bradford (Big Bear, Calif./Big Bear) earned the victory for Southern New Hampshire, tossing a complete game two-hitter with seven strikeouts.

Sophomore Stephanie Howard was 2-3 with a double in game two for the Ravens.

In game two, sophomore Michelle Maranto (East Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) led Southern New Hampshire, hitting 1-3 with one run scored, while senior Sandra Lawton (Woburn, Mass./Woburn) went 1-2 with one RBI. Sophomore Nicole Arpin (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) was also solid for the Penmen with a 1-3 performance.

Sophomore Stephanie Howard (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) led Franklin Pierce offensively in game two, hitting 2-3 with a double. Junior Nicole Leary (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) chipped in with a 1-2 performance, while Elaine Matthews and freshman Kristen Tracy (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Walter Panas) added one hit apiece.

After four scoreless innings, Southern New Hampshire broke the scoring silence in the bottom of the fifth inning as Lawton connected for a single up the middle to drive home Maranto. Senior pitcher Ashley Smith (Franklin, N.H./Franklin) then retired the final six Franklin Pierce batters to clinch the victory for the Penmen.

Courtney Jacobs suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce (6-11), tossing six innings while allowing one run on three hits. Smith earned her fourth victory of the season with the complete game shutout, yielding only five hits while striking out four.

Franklin Pierce (7-21, 4-12 NE-10) will be in action again tomorrow as it hosts Assumption College at 3 p.m. Southern New Hampshire University (15-9, 12-6 NE-10) will host Assumption on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
