Franklin Pierce Splits At Saint Michael’s
Ravens edge Purple Knights 6-3 in game one; suffer 5-0 defeat in game two

COLCHESTER, VT. (April 11, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce softball team earned a split decision with regionally ranked Saint Michael’s College in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon. The Ravens edged the Purple Knights 6-3 over ten innings in game one before suffering a 5-0 loss in the nightcap.

Freshman Kylie Molinari registered her third homerun of the season to lead the Ravens to victory in game one.

Freshman Kylie Molinari (Meriden, Conn./Maloney) led the Franklin Pierce six hit attack in game one, hitting 1-5 with a homerun (3) and three RBI. Junior Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) went 1-1, with a homerun (1), two runs scored and one RBI, while sophomore Jen Ryan (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) chipped in with her first collegiate homerun, one run scored and two RBI.

Sophomore Ashley Harkin (Colchester, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union) was solid for Saint Michael’s, hitting 2-5 with a homerun, two runs scored and one RBI. Senior Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) was also strong for the Purple Knights with a 2-4 performance, including a double and one RBI.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the top of the second inning on Surgen’s first homerun of the season. Saint Michael’s fired back in the bottom of the fourth inning with single run on a RBI double by Roberge.

Franklin Pierce gained a 3-1 advantage in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run homerun by Ryan, but Saint Michael’s collected two runs over the final three innings to force extra frames. The Purple Knights plated one run in the bottom fifth, before posting a single run in the bottom of the seventh on a homerun by Harkins.

After two scoreless extra innings, Franklin Pierce broke the scoring silence as Molinari connected for her third homerun of the season to drive in sophomores Jackie Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and Elaine Matthews (Roslindale, Mass./Archbishop Williams). Sophomore pitcher Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) retired the last three batters to secure the victory for the Ravens.

Jacobs earned the victory for Franklin Pierce, tossing six innings in relief (5-6). The sophomore standout yielded only one run, on one hit, while striking out six. Freshman  Ashley Stewart (Westmoreland, N.H./Monadnock Regional) earned the no-decision for the Ravens, allowing two runs on three hits over four innings, while striking out one. Roberge suffered the loss for Saint Michael’s.

Sophomore Courtney Jacobs led the Ravens with two hits in game two.

Senior Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) led the Saint Michael’s charge in game two, hitting 2-3 with one run scored and two RBI, while sophomore Megan O’Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) went 2-3 with a double, one run scored and one RBI. Meggan Roberge added a double, one run scored and one RBI, while junior Katy Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) chipped in with a homerun.

Sophomore Courtney Jacobs led the Franklin Pierce offense, hitting 2-3 with two singles, while freshman Kristen Tracy (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Walter Panas) went 1-3 with a base-hit.

Saint Michael’s scored the only run in would need in a three run, third inning. Newland ignited the rally with her first homerun of the season, while Currier chipped in with a RBI single. The Purple Knights added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI double by Roberge.

Jacobs suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce, yielding five runs (three earned), on ten hits over five innings of work, while striking out two and walking one (5-7). O’Connor earned the victory for Saint Michael’s with a complete game, three hit shutout.

Franklin Pierce (5-15, 2-8 NE-10) is scheduled to play Saturday against Stonehill College at 12 p.m. Site to be determined. Saint Michael’s (14-5, 4-3 NE-10) will host Assumption College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
