Falls To Southern Connecticut LEOMINSTER, MASS. (April 22, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce softball team suffered a pair of extra inning losses to Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon at Lassie League Field. The Ravens suffered a 2-1 loss in game one before being edged 3-1 in game two. Southern Connecticut 2, Franklin Pierce 1 (10 innings)
Sophomore Monica Savarese (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) led the Southern Connecticut offensive attack in game one, hitting 3-4 with a double and one RBI. Classmate Brittany Gandley (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) collected one hit for the Owls, while senior Elizabeth Eymold (Franklin Square, N.Y./Nassau CC) chipped in with one run scored. Sophomore Jen Ryan (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) led Franklin Pierce offensively, hitting 1-2 with a walk, while senior captain Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) collected a base-hit. Sophomores Jackie Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and Elaine Matthews (Roslindale, Mass./Archbishop Williams) chipped in with one hit apiece. After seven scoreless innings, Southern Connecticut opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the eighth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Franklin Pierce battled back in the bottom half of the inning as freshman Jenna Hunt (Winchendon, Mass./Murdock) crossed the plate off a single from Ryan. With the score knotted at 1-1, Southern Connecticut regained the lead in the top of the tenth inning as Savarese laced an RBI double to drive home Eymold. Franklin Pierce threatened in the bottom of the frame, but junior pitcher Jessica Dempsey (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) recorded the final out to seal the victory. Sophomore Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce (6-9). The sophomore hurler tossed a complete game, four-hitter, allowing two runs (no earned) while striking out four and walking three. In game two, senior Lindsey Castano (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) led Southern Connecticut hitting with a 3-5 performance, including one run scored. Freshman Megan Caporossi (Northford, Conn./North Branford) was also solid, hitting 2-4 with one RBI, while freshman Kerry Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) went 2-4 with a triple and two RBI. Sophomore Brittany Gandley chipped in with a double and one run scored. Sophomore Elaine Matthews was solid offensively for Franklin Pierce, hitting 3-4 with three singles, while senior captain Michelle McConnell went 2-4 with one run scored. Sophomore Jackie Prybella chipped in with a 2-4 performance, while freshman Jenna Hunt hit 1-2. Southern Connecticut jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Caporossi belted an RBI single to drive home Castano (single). Franklin Pierce rallied back in the fourth inning as freshman Alyse Bookman (Everett, Mass./Everett) drove in McConnell (single) with a sacrifice fly. After four scoreless innings, Southern Connecticut broke the scoring silence in the top of the ninth inning as Iacomini launched a triple to drive home two runs and clinch the victory for the Owls. Senior Emily Atkinson (Novato, Calif./Golden West CC) and Gandley ignited the Owl rally with consecutive hits to open the inning before Atkinson connected for her game-winning blast. Junior Becky Aalto (Hubbardston, Mass./Gardner) suffered the loss for the Ravens, yielding three earned runs on nine hits, while striking out two. Sophomore Amanda Pindar (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) earned the win for Southern Connecticut, allowing only one run on ten hits over eight strong innings. Iacomini picked up the save in relief. Franklin Pierce (7-19, 4-10 NE-10) will be in action again tomorrow as it travels to Southern New Hampshire University at 3 p.m. Southern Connecticut (26-9. 15-3 NE-10) will travel to Stonehill College on Tuesday at 3 p.m. |
