McConnell, Surgen Named To All-Academic Team
Ravens collect first career honors with third team nominations


Senior captain Michelle McConnell earns her first All-Academic honor.

RINDGE, N.H. (April 247, 2007) – Senior captain Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) and junior captain Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) of the Franklin Pierce softball team were named to the 2007 Northeast-10 All Academic Third Team as selected by the Conference’s Sports Information Directors.

            McConnell earns her first Northeast-10 All-Academic Third Team honor after totaling a 3.24 cumulative grade point average while majoring in Biology. McConnell has been a four year letterwinner for the Franklin Pierce softball team, serving as captain during her junior and senior seasons. She currently ranks second in program history with 143 games played, while totaling 84 hits, including eight doubles, one homerun, 34 runs scored and 35 RBI.

            This season, McConnell ranks fourth on the team in hitting, posting 20 hits with three doubles, one homerun and eight RBI. She helped lift the Ravens past Pace University, 1-0 in game one, with her first collegiate homerun, while registering a 2-4 performance with one run scored and one RBI in the nightcap. McConnell has also been solid defensively this season for the Ravens, ranking fourth on the team with .978 fielding percentage.


Junior captain Kate Surgen was named to the Northeast-10 All-Academic Third Team.

Surgen earns her first Northeast-10 All-Academic accolade after recording a 3.34 cumulative grade point average while majoring in Biology. Surgen has been a three year letterwinner for the Ravens, serving as captain during her sophomore and junior seasons. She has appeared in 102 career games, registering 51 hits with two doubles, one homerun, 29 runs scored and 15 RBI.

            This season, Surgen has appeared in 29 games, starting 28. She has collected 17 hits, one double, one homerun, 11 runs scored and four RBI. She led the Ravens in a 2-1 victory over Pace University, hitting 1-4 with her first collegiate homerun, one run scored and two RBI. She was also solid in the Ravens win over Albright College, hitting 2-3 with one run scored.         

            Franklin Pierce (8-22, 5-15 NE-10) will be in action again on Thursday as it hosts the College of Saint Rose at 3 p.m.
