Le Moyne Battles Past Franklin Pierce
Ravens edged 2-0 in game one; fall 14-6 in game two

 RINDGE, N.H. (May 1, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce softball team suffered a pair of losses to Le Moyne College in Northeast-10 Conference action this evening at the Franklin Pierce softball field. The Ravens were edged 2-0 in game one, before suffering a 14-6 setback in game two.

Junior Nicole Leary hit 1-3 with a single in game one for the Ravens.

Freshman Bailey Phillips (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) led the Le Moyne offense in game one, hitting 2-3 with two singles, while senior Lindsay Spaziani (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) went 1-3 with one stolen base and one RBI. Sophomore Caitlin O’Neill (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) added a hit for the Dolphins, while junior Emma Murphy (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) chipped in with one run scored.

Junior Nicole Leary (Hanover, Mass./Hanover), senior Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) and sophomore Stephanie Howard (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) led Franklin Pierce with one hit apiece.

Le Moyne struck first in the top half of the second inning as Murphy scored on a wild pitch. The Dolphins added an insurance run in the top of the sixth frame on an RBI single by Spaziani.

Franklin Pierce threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning with hits by McConnell and Howard, but junior reliever Caylinn Christophersen (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) recorded the final out for Le Moyne to clinch the victory.

Sophomore Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce (7-14). The veteran hurler tossed a complete game, yielding two runs on four hits, while striking out 11 and walking six. Senior Martha Senko (Pine City, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy) earned the victory for Le Moyne, allowing three hits and no runs over 6.2 innings of work. Christophersen earned her second save of the season as she retired the final Raven batter.

Freshman Kylie Molinari was 2-3 with two singles to lead the Ravens in game two.

Bailey Phillips led the Le Moyne attack in game two, hitting a team-best 4-5 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and four RBI. Lindsay Spaziani was also solid with  a 3-5 performance, two runs scored and two RBI, while senior Kristen DesLauriers (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) finished 2-3 with a double, one run scored and one RBI.

Freshman Kylie Molinari (Meriden, Conn./Maloney) led Franklin Pierce, hitting 2-3 with two singles and two runs scored, while junior Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) went 1-3 with one run scored and two RBI. Stephanie Howard added a double, one run scored and one RBI, while freshman Jenna Hunt () hit 1-3 with one run scored.

Le Moyne jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in the top of the third inning, registering eight runs on five hits and four errors. Phillips led the charge with an RBI triple that drove in three, while DesLauriers connected for an RBI double.

Franklin Pierce responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with five runs on four hits and two errors. Leary led the Raven scoring surge with an RBI double that drove in two, while Surgen belted an RBI single down the leftfield line.

Le Moyne collected a single run in the top of the sixth inning, but Franklin Pierce countered with a score in the bottom of the frame to cut the Dolphin lead to 9-6. In the top of the seventh, the Dolphins rallied for five runs on six hits to gain a 14-6 advantage. Sophomore Winonah Cook (Onondaga Nation/Lafayette) led the rally with an RBI single that drove in two, while sophomore Lyndsey Balinskas (Edison, N.J./Edison) and Spaziani connected for RBI singles.

Caylinn Christophersen earned the win for Le Moyne, allowing six runs on six hits over 5.1 innings of work. Sophomore Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) notched her second save of the season with 1.2 innings of shutout relief. Junior Becky Aalto (Hubbardston, Mass./Gardner) suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce, yielding 14 runs (seven earned) on 17 hits over seven innings of work.

Franklin Pierce (9-27, 6-20 NE-10) will be in action again tomorrow as it hosts Saint Anselm College at 1 p.m. Le Moyne (30-13, 23-4 NE-10) awaits its berth in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament.
