Franklin Pierce Splits Season-Opener
Ravens defeat
Wooster 5-4 in game one, fall 10-2 to Bowdoin in nightcap


Sophomore Elaine Matthews hit a walk-off RBI double to lead Franklin Pierce to a 5-4 victory over the College of Wooster in game one.

FORT MYERS, FLA. (March 17, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce softball team earned a split decision in its opening doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Classic this evening. The Ravens opened the day with a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over The College of Wooster in game one, before suffering a tough 10-2 setback to Bowdoin College in the nightcap.

             Franklin Pierce rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 5-4 victory over the College of Wooster in game one.

            Sophomore Elaine Matthews (Roslindale, Mass./Archbishop Williams) led the Franklin Pierce ten-hit attack with a 2-4 performance, including the game-winning, walk-off double, and four RBI. Junior Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) was 3-4 with three singles and two runs scored, while sophomore Stephanie Howard (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) hit 2-3 with two doubles and two runs scored. Freshman Kylie Molinari (Meriden, Conn./Maloney) chipped in with a homerun (1) and one RBI in her first collegiate contest.

            Sophomore pitcher Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) hurled a complete game, four-hitter for Franklin Pierce, yielding four runs (zero earned), with 12 strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore Katie Pifer (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) suffered the loss for Wooster, allowing five runs on ten hits in seven innings pitched.

Junior Becky Aalto struck out three over four innings and allowed zero earned runs in game two.

Bowdoin College rallied for five runs in the third and sixth innings to erase an early 1-0 deficit and claim its fifth straight victory.

            Freshman Kristen Tracy (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Walter Panas) led the Franklin Pierce offense, hitting 3-3 with one double, one homerun (1), and one RBI. Freshman Kylie Molinari finished 1-2 in the nightcap with a triple and one RBI, while classmate Jenna Hunt (Winchendon, Mass./Winthrop) and sophomore Kristen Scagliarini (Westfield, Mass./Springfield Tech.) chipped in with one hit apiece.

            Junior Becky Aalto (Hubbardston, Mass./Gardner) suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce, yielding five runs (zero earned), on three hits and three strikeouts over four innings of work. Freshman Ashley Stewart (Westmoreland, N.H./Monadnock) tossed two innings of relief for the Ravens, allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits. Freshman Julia Jacobs (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) earned the victory for Bowdoin, yielding two runs on eight hits over six innings of work.

            Franklin Pierce (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) will be in action again tomorrow as it faces Plymouth State College at 7 p.m. The College of Wooster (3-6, 0-0 NCAC) will face Bowdoin College (5-0, 0-0 NESCAC) tomorrow at 3 p.m.
