Splits With Bentley WALTHAM, MASS. (April 30, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce softball team earned a split decision with Bentley College in Northeast-10 Conference action this evening at the Dana Center. Sophomore Jackie Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) led the Franklin Pierce attack in game one, hitting a perfect 1-1 with two runs scored and one RBI. Classmate Elaine Matthews (Roslindale, Mass./Archbishop Williams) was also with a triple and two RBI, while junior Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) chipped in with a 1-2 performance, including a double and one run scored. Senior Allison Cummei (Acton, Mass./Acton Boxborough) registered the lone hit for Bentley, hitting 1-2 with a single while sophomore Ashley DeRosa (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) added one RBI. Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, as Matthews and senior Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) connected for RBIs to give the Ravens a 2-0 edge. The Ravens added a single run in the top of the third inning on an RBI triple by Matthews. Bentley responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning as sophomore Allison Hitchcock (Abington, Mass./Abington) scored on a sacrifice fly by DeRosa. Franklin Pierce added an insurance run in the top half of the fifth inning to secure the victory. Sophomore Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) earned the win for Franklin Pierce. (7-13). The veteran hurler tossed a complete game, one hitter, yielding one earned run while striking out four. Senior Maureen McGinn (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) suffered the loss for Bentley, tossing a complete game three-hitter, allowing four runs (one earned) while striking out four. Sophomore leftfielder Dina Ferriero (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) led the Bentley attack in game two, hitting 3-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Cummei was also solid for the Falcons, hitting 3-4 with a double, one run scored and two RBI, while Hitchcock was 2-4 with a triple, one run scored and three RBI. Jackie Prybella was solid for Franklin Pierce in game two, going 3-4 with a double, three runs scored and one RBI. Michelle McConnell was also strong with a 2-4 performance and one RBI, while Nicole Leary hit 2-4 with two singles. Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with two runs on one hit and two errors. Bentley responded with three run rally in the bottom of the frame, capped by an RBI double to right field by DeRosa. Franklin Pierce countered with two runs in the top of the second inning as Prybella connected for an RBI double to drive home Surgen. Bentley added a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning to knot the score at 4-4 on an RBI single by freshman Christina Figueredo (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional). Bentley secured the victory with a five run scoring explosion in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a lead-off single by Figueredo and a pair of errors on sacrifice bunts loaded the bases, Hitchcock registered an RBI triple, driving in three. Ferriero and Cummei followed with RBI doubles, stretching the lead to 9-4. Freshman Ashley Messina (Hanover, Mass./Hanover HS) earned the victory for Bentley, tossing five innings of solid relief. She allowed one run on seven hits, while striking out four. Junior Becky Aalto (Hubbardston, Mass./Gardner) suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce, yielding nine runs (four earned) on 14 hits over six complete innings. Franklin Pierce (9-25, 6-18 NE-10) will be in action again tomorrow as it hosts Le Moyne College at 3 p.m. Bentley College (2-36, 2-22 NE-10) will travel to Bryant University tomorrow at 3 p.m. |
