Splits At American International
SPRINGFIELD, MASS. (March 31, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce softball team earned a split decision against American International College in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon at Groff Field. The Ravens edged the Yellow Jackets 2-1 in game one before suffering a 9-3 defeat in game two. Franklin Pierce 2, American International 1 Sophomore Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) led Franklin Pierce both in the circle and with the bat, pitching seven strong innings for her fourth win of the season (4-2) and hitting 2-3 with a double. In the circle, Jacobs yielded just the one earned run on seven hits with seven strikeouts and just two walks over her complete game effort. With her seven strikeouts, Jacobs became the program’s all-time career strikeout leader with 187 strikeouts to date. Freshman Kylie Molinari (Meriden, Conn./Maloney) was also solid for Franklin Pierce offensively, hitting 1-2 with a walk and one RBI. Senior captain Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) went 1-3 with a double and one run scored, while sophomore Jackie Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and freshman Kristen Tracy (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Walter Panas) chipped in with one hit apiece. Junior Teresa Bonavita (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) led the American International attack with a 2-4 performance, while freshman Michelle Franey (Abington, Mass./Abington) collected a homerun, one run scored and one RBI. Sophomore Deanna Zanetti (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug) added a double for the Yellow Jackets. Sophomore Sara Puglisi (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) suffered the loss for American International (3-3). She tossed a complete game, yielding two runs (one earned) on six hits, while walking four and striking out nine. Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the top of the second inning on back-to-back doubles by McConnell and Jacobs and struck again in the top of the sixth frame on a RBI single by Molinari. American International responded in the bottom half of the inning with one run on Franey’s first collegiate homerun, but Jacobs recorded the final two outs to end the Yellow Jacket threat. Teresa Bonavita led the American International charge in game two, hitting 2-3 with two doubles, one run scored and two RBI. Junior Tara Demontier (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) posted a 2-4 performance with a double, three runs scored and two RBI, while freshman Katelyn Elie (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) hit 3-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Sophomore Elaine Matthews (Roslindale, Mass./Archbishop Williams) led Franklin Pierce offensively with a 1-3 performance, including a homerun (1), one run scored and two RBI. Jackie Prybella hit 1-3 with one run scored, while Courtney Jacobs registered one hit and one RBI. Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with a leadoff homerun by Matthews. American International fired back in the bottom half of the inning with a three run rally capped by a Demontier RBI double. The Ravens tied the score at three in the top of the third inning on RBIs by Jacobs and Matthews. American International broke the game open with two runs scored in each of the last three innings. Bonavita led the Yellow Jacket scoring surge with a RBI double in the fifth inning, while Elie chipped in with an RBI single in the sixth. Junior Becky Aalto (Hubbardston, Mass./Gardner) suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce, yielding seven runs (four earned) over five innings (0-4). Freshman Sara Sweptston (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) earned the win for American International with three scoreless innings of relief (2-5). Franklin Pierce (4-8, 1-1 NE-10) will be in action again tomorrow as it travels to Merrimack College at 12 p.m. American International (6-12, 1-1 NE-10) will host Post University tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. |
