Franklin Pierce Rolls Past Plymouth State, 7-2
Ravens total 11 hits to earn second victory of the season


Sophomore Elaine Matthews hit a perfect 4-4 in the Ravens 7-2 victory over Plymouth State College this evening.

FORT MYERS, FLA. (March 18, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce softball team posted a decisive 7-2 victory over Plymouth State College this evening at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.

            Sophomore Elaine Matthews (Roslindale, Mass./Archbishop Williams) led the Franklin Pierce 11-hit attack with a perfect 4-4 performance, including a double and one RBI. Junior Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) was 2-3 in the contest, while sophomore Stephanie Howard (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) chipped in with her first homerun of the season. Freshman Alyse Bookman (Everett, Mass./Everett) hit 1-2 with a single and two RBI, while sophomore Jackie Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) connected for a double and two RBI.

            Franklin Pierce pitcher Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) collected her second consecutive victory in the circle (2-0), with a complete game effort. The sophomore hurler scattered three hits over seven innings, allowing only two runs (one earned) with two walks and nine strikeouts. Freshman Beth Moretti (Woonsocket, R.I./Woonsocket) suffered the loss for Plymouth State, yielding six runs over four innings of work. Classmate Ashley Pink am (Center Barnstead, N.H./Kingswood) tossed two innings of solid relief for the Panthers.

            Franklin Pierce exploded for six runs over the first three innings and never looked to secure its second victory of the season. Howard ignited the Raven rally early in the first inning with her first homerun of season, before Matthews, Prybella and Bookman combined for four RBI in the second inning to give the Ravens a 5-0 advantage. The Ravens added an insurance run in the sixth inning to clinch the victory.

            Franklin Pierce (2-1, 0-0 NE-10) will be in action again tomorrow against New York Institute of Technology at 3 p.m. and Hillsdale College at 7 p.m. Plymouth State
(0-1, 0-0 LEC) will face Fredonia State College tomorrow at 9 a.m.
