Pierce Splits Twin-bill With New York Tech
RINDGE, N.H. (April 8, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce softball team split a pair of games with New York Institute of Technology in non-conference action this afternoon at the Franklin Pierce Softball Field. The Ravens notched a 3-1 win in their home-opener before being defeated 7-0 in the nightcap. In game one, Franklin Pierce registered three runs on six hits in six innings of work. Sophomore Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) led the Ravens offensively, recording two hits, including a triple, and scoring two runs. Classmate Lindsay Knapp (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) connected for one hit and two RBIs while junior Nicole Burk (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and freshman Jackie Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) each chipped in with one hit apiece. New York Tech struck first in the top of the first scoring one run, but Knapp limited the Bears to one hit over the next six innings to secure her third victory of the season for the Ravens. Franklin Pierce quickly rallied back in the bottom of the third, knotting the game at 1-1 as Giardina tripled and was driven in by freshman Elaine Matthews (Roslindale, Mass./Archbishop Williams). Franklin Pierce added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure its sixth win this season. Giardina led off the inning with her second hit of the game. After a fielder’s choice by Matthews which put runners on second and third base, Knapp belted an RBI double to give the Ravens the 3-1 advantage. Knapp tossed a complete game, yielding three hits, one earned run, while striking out four batters. New York Tech senior Nicole Swistun (East Islip, NY/East Islip HS) suffered the loss, tossing six innings, allowing five hits, three runs, two earned while striking out seven.

In game two, Franklin Pierce was limited to only two hits as New York Tech sophomore pitcher Ashley Petraglia (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) tossed seven solid innings to pick up her fourth victory of the season. The Ravens were led by Giardina and junior Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) who each tallied base-hits. New York Tech scored all the runs it would need in the top half of the first inning. After back to back walks to sophomore Courtney Palma (Bay Shore, N.Y./Academy of St. Joseph) and freshman Ashley Gosk (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), sophomore Katelyn Thomas (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) drove in the first Bear run on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Two batters later, junior Amanda Graham (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) brought in two more runs on an RBI single. Franklin Pierce freshman Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) tossed a complete game, allowing seven runs, four earned, on seven hits, while walking three batters and striking out ten.
