Lowell Sweeps Franklin Pierce
LOWELL, MASS (April 6, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce softball team suffered two tough losses to UMass Lowell in Northeast-10 Conference action this evening at River View Field. The River Hawks posted an 8-0 win in game one before registering a 6-2 win the nightcap. In game one, UMass Lowell junior Kristen Mahoney (Burlington, Mass.) limited Franklin Pierce to three hits over five innings of play. Franklin Pierce junior Nicole Burk (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand), sophomore Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) and freshman Jen Ryan (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) combined for all three Raven hits. Lowell scored the only runs it would during the bottom of the first inning as sophomore Julie Brodie (Chelmsford, Mass.) reached base as she was hit by a pitch. Brodie later stole second and later scored on a fielder’s choice by junior Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, Mass.). Tanguay crossed the plate two batters later on a single by junior Jacheal Guanci (Everett, Mass.) to give the River Hawks a 2-0 advantage. Sophomore Lindsday Knapp (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce. She tossed four and two thirds innings, allowing eight runs, six earned, on nine hits and two walks while striking out one. Mahoney threw five solid innings for Lowell, allowing three hits and striking out seven for her eighth victory of the season.

In game two, the Ravens recorded two runs on three hits in seven innings of play. Junior Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) led the Ravens with two base-hits and one RBI, while Knapp picked up the Ravens third hit. Freshman Stephanie Howard (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) chipped in with an RBI for the Ravens. Franklin Pierce took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Giardina was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a throwing error. Two batters later, McConnell tallied her first hit of the game, driving in Giardina to give the Ravens the early edge. UMass Lowell countered for two runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Junior Vicki Guido (Winchester, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a throwing error. Next batter, freshman Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, Mass.) singled up the middle, driving in two runs and giving the River Hawks a 2-1 lead. UMass Lowell landed two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead for good. Guido lead off the inning with a double to right field and one batter later, Lajoie connected for a home run to centerfield to secure the victory for the River Hawks. Franklin Pierce freshman Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) tossed a complete game six hitter, allowing six runs, four earned , while striking out six. Freshman Cyrilla Suker (Voorheesville, N.Y.) threw all seven innings for the UMass Lowell, yielding two runs, none earned, on three hits while striking out eight.
