Franklin Pierce Splits Twinbill With Saint Rose
Ravens edged 3-0 in game one; take nightcap 5-0


Sophomore Lindsay Knapp registered three hits to lead the Ravens offensively in game one, while tossing a complete game shutout in game two.

ROTTERDAM, N.Y. (April 20, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce softball team split a Northeast-10 doubleheader with the College of Saint Rose this evening at RGSL Complex. The Ravens were edged 3-0 in game one, but rebounded to take the nightcap, 5-0

In game one, Saint Rose sophomore pitcher Kristen Calahan (LaGrange, NY/Arlington) limited the Ravens to only two hits throughout the game, while allowing one walk and striking out eight batters. Franklin Pierce sophomore Lindsay Knapp (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) and freshman Elaine Matthews (Roslindale, Mass./Archbishop Williams) combined for the two Raven hits, each notching a single.

Saint Rose broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth as junior Evelyn Peters (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) doubled to centerfield to score freshman Cara Piccarreto (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) and classmate Kerry Monahan (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow). Saint Rose added an insurance run in the sixth, as Monahan recorded a sacrifice fly to centerfield to send Calahan home.

Franklin Pierce freshman pitcher Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) suffered the loss for the Ravens. The freshman right-hander allowed three runs, one earned on five hits through six innings while striking out four.

Freshman Jackie Prybella tallied two hits in game two for the Ravens and scored one run.

In game two, Franklin Pierce registered six hits and five runs over seven innings to earn its ninth victory of the season. The Ravens were led offensively by Knapp and freshman Jackie Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield). Knapp recorded two base-hits in the game while Prybella notched two-hits, including a double, and one RBI. Freshmen Becky Savard (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) and Matthews each chipped in with one hit apiece.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the second game with one run in the top of the first inning as Prybella scored on a wild pitch to give the Ravens an early advantage. The Ravens added a single run in the fourth as junior captain Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) crossed the plate on a Matthews double to left field. In the sixth, the Ravens tacked on three more runs to secure the victory. 

            Knapp tossed the complete game shutout for Franklin Pierce to earn her fifth victory of the season. The sophomore right-hander allowed only four hits over seven innings, while striking out two. Saint Rose freshman pitcher Nicole Welch (Albany, NY/Colonie) went the distance for the Golden Knights, allowing five runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out four. 

Franklin Pierce (9-18-1, 2-11-1 NE-10) will be in action on Saturday as it travels to Le Moyne College for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. The College of Saint Rose (5-21, 4-10 NE-10) will travel to Saint Michael’s College on Saturday for a twinbill at 12 p.m.
