Franklin Pierce Nipped By Stonehill
Ravens defeated 5-3 in game one; play to 6-6 tie in game two

RINDGE, N.H. (April 3, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce softball team suffered a tough 5-3 loss in game before rounding out the day with a 6-6 tie in game two to Stonehill College this afternoon in Northeast-10 opening day action.

In game one, Franklin Pierce out-hit Stonehill ten to six, but the Ravens were only able to plate three runners. Sophomores Lindsay Knapp (Elmira, N.Y./Nortre Dame) and Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) led the Ravens with two this apiece. Knapp belted her second homerun of the year and freshman Stephanie Howard (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) connected for her first collegiate homerun.

Stonehill opened the scoring in the first inning of the game, as the Skyhawks registered two runs on a pair of RBI groundouts by sophomores Jaime Ippolito (Chelsea, Mass.) and Caitlin Flanagan (Cornwall, N.Y.). Stonehill increased its lead to 5-0 after a home run by senior Christine Grenache's (Leominster, Mass.) .

Franklin Pierce rallied back during the fourth inning as Howard connected for her first home run of her career. One inning later, Knapp tallied a leadoff home run and freshman Jen Ryan (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) recorded an RBI single to cut the Stonehill lead to 5-3, but that’s as close as the Ravens would come in the game.

 Knapp suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce. She tossed a complete game, allowing five earned runs runs, on six hits and four walks while striking out five. Stonehill sophomore Danielle Mason (Salisbury, Mass.) fired a complete game, allowing three runs on ten hits, while striking out three and walking two.

In game two, the Ravens had four different players register hits. Freshmen Elaine Matthews (Rolsindale, Mass./Archbishop Williams), Jackie Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and Ryan each registered base hits while sophomore Nicole Leary (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) posted an RBI double.

Stonehill took an early 3-0 lead as a Caitlin Flanagan (Cornwall, N.Y.) recorded an RBI single and freshman Courtney Young (Danvers, Mass.) posted a two-run home run in the first inning. Franklin Pierce answered back with four runs in the third frame to knot the game at four as Matthews and Prybella registered consecutive hits to lead the Raven charge.

The Ravens took a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth on an error and an RBI double by but Katie Mottau (Woonsocket, R.I.)  provided Stonehill with a huge lift in the bottom of the frame as she connected for a two-out, two-run homer to tie the game. The game was called after the inning ended due to darkness.

Franklin Pierce freshman Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) tossed a complete game five hitter, allowing six earned runs and striking out 11 batters. Mottau threw a complete game for the Skyhawks, allowing six runs, five earned, on four hits while walking seven and striking out one.

Franklin Pierce (5-6-1, 0-1-1 NE-10) will be in action again tomorrow as the Ravens host Merrimack College at 3:30 p.m. Stonehill College (8-5-1, 1-0-1 NE-10) will travel to Bryant University on Thursday for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
