Saint Michael’s Stops Franklin Pierce
Purple Knights notch 9-0 win in game one; take game two 3-1

RINDGE, N.H. (April 26, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce softball team suffered a pair of losses to Saint Michael’s College in a Northeast-10 doubleheader this afternoon at the Franklin Pierce Softball Field. The Purple Knights posted 9-0 win in game one, before edging the Ravens 3-1 in the nightcap.

In game one, Saint Michael’s pitcher, junior Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) limited Franklin Pierce to only one hit to lead the Purple Knights to their 13th victory of the season. Raven sophomore Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) registered the lone hit for the Ravens, a two-out single in the bottom of the second inning.

Saint Michael’s was led by senior Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) who was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, registering two homeruns, two runs scored and five RBIs on the day. Roberge was also 3-for-3 in the game with a run scored and two RBIs.

Saint Michael’s broke the game open in the top of the second inning, as the Purple Knights posted five runs on fours hits. Freshman Ashley Harkins (Colchester, Vt./Georgetown) led the inning off with a triple and Roberge connected for an RBI base-hit to start the rally. After a Raven error and a Purple Knight single, Newland capped off the inning with her first homerun of the game to give the Purple Knights an early 6-0 lead.

In the top half of the fifth inning, Saint Michael’s tacked on three more runs as Newland lead off the inning with her second homerun of the game. Following the homerun, the Purple Knights rallied off four consecutive singles, recording two more runs to take a commanding 9-0 lead.

Franklin Pierce freshman right-hander Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) suffered the loss, yielding six runs, two earned on seven hits while striking out three batters. Sophomore Becky Aalto (Hubbardston, Mass./Gardner) tossed two innings of relief for the Ravens allowing three earned runs on five hits. Roberge went the distance for Saint Michaels, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out 11 batters.

Sophomore Jenna Giardina posted a hit and an RBI in game two.

In game two, Saint Michael's pitcher Megan O’Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) held Franklin Pierce to only one run, on one hit, while striking out 11 batters to lead the Purple Knights to their 14th victory. Raven sophomore Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) posted one hit and one RBI, including a double in the bottom of the sixth inning that plated classmate Nicole Leary (Hanover, Mass./Hanover).

Saint Michael’s opened the scoring in the top half of the sixth inning as junior Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stonehleigh-Burnham) led the inning off with a walk. O’Connor then connected for an RBI double and was later driven in on a Roberge RBI base-hit to give the Purple Knights a 2-0 lead.

Franklin Pierce countered in the bottom half of the innings, as Giardina drove in Leary to score the Ravens first run of the day. Saint Michael’s tallied an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning as Newland connected for a homerun, her third of the day, to secure the victory

Franklin Pierce sophomore Lindsay Knapp (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) suffered the loss as she went the distance in the circle. Knapp tossed seven innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while walking two batters and striking out eight .

Franklin Pierce (11-20-1, 4-13-1 NE-10) will be in action tomorrow as it hosts Southern New Hampshire University at 3:30 p.m. Saint Michael’s College (14-18, 8-10 NE-10)  will host Le Moyne College at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
