Posts First Conference Victory
MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 18, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce softball team split a Northeast-10 doubleheader with host Saint Anselm College this afternoon at Saint Anselm College. The Ravens posted their first conference victory, taking game one 2-1 over ten innings before being nipped 1-0 in the nightcap. In game one, both teams remained scoreless through the first nine innings as Raven pitcher, freshman Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) and Saint Anselm starter, junior Jaclyn Kinsman (Tewksbury, Mass.) silenced opposing batters. Franklin Pierce receive solid offensive production from junior Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) who led the Ravens with two base-hits, while sophomore Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) and freshman Jackie Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) recorded one hit a piece and both Raven runs. Franklin Pierce posted the first runs of the day in the top of the tenth inning with a pair of unearned runs as Giardina and Prybella crossed the plate. Saint Anselm threatened in the bottom of the tenth, answering with a run as junior Danielle Comer (Worcester, Mass.) drove in freshman Elise Palmieri (Worcester, Mass.) with an RBI single down the left field line.
Jacobs tossed all ten innings for
Franklin Pierce, yielding one run, zero earned, on five hits while
walking three and striking out six. Kinsman was also solid for the
Hawks, hurling all ten innings as well, allowing two runs, zero earned
on seven hits, while striking out two.

In game two, Franklin Pierce was limited to four hits over seven innings as Saint Anselm pitcher senior Brigitte June (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) earned her seventh victory of the season. Franklin Pierce freshman Stephanie Howard (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) led the Ravens with two hits, including a double, while sophomore Lindsay Knapp (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) and Giardina posted base-hits for Franklin Pierce. Saint Anselm notched the only run of the game, as the Hawks posted a single run in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Freshman Brittany Birch (Bradford, Mass./) singled up the middle, stole second, and later scored the lone run of the game on a Raven error. Knapp suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce, tossing a complete game, three-hitter, allowing one unearned run while striking out two batters. June went the distance for Saint Anselm, tossing a complete game, shutout, allowing only four hits and striking out five batters. to improve to 7-9 overall, while Lindsay Knapp took the loss for Franklin Pierce.
Franklin Pierce (8-17-1, 1-10-1
NE-10) will be in action on Thursday as it travels to the College of
Saint Rose for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. Saint Anselm College
(12-20, 5-13 NE-10) will host the College of Saint Rose of Tuesday
April 25th for a match starting at 3:30 p.m.
