Pierce Earns Home Split With Dowling
RINDGE, N.H. (April 9, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce softball team split a pair of games with Dowling College in non-conference action this afternoon at the Franklin Pierce Softball Field. The Ravens notched a 2-0 win behind stellar pitching by sophomore Lindsay Knapp (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) in game one before dropping the nightcap 9-2. In game one, Franklin Pierce received a solid performance from Knapp both offensively and in the circle. Knapp earned her fourth victory of the season as she threw a complete game shutout, while allowing only one hit and striking out three, while going 2-for-3 at the plate. Sophomores Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) and Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) were also solid in game one, each registering a hit and one RBI. Franklin Pierce scored the only runs of the game during a two run second inning. Junior Nicole Burk (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Three batters later, Surgen and Giardina connected for back-to-back RBI singles to knock home Burk and freshman Jackie Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield), giving the Ravens the only runs it would need. Dowling College freshman pitcher Stephanie Plochochi suffered the loss, tossing a complete game. She allowed eight hits, two runs, one earned while striking out two and walking no batters.

In game two, Franklin Pierce committed seven errors which led to nine runs by Dowling College. The Ravens received solid offense production from junior Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) and Knapp who both registered a base-hit and one RBI. Burk tallied a double in the game, while Giardina extender her hitting streak to six games. Dowling College scored three early runs in the top of the first inning off Franklin Pierce starter Becky Aalto (Hubbardston, Mass./Gardner). Golden Lion junior Lindsay Heinz drew a lead-off walk to start the inning and later stole second base. Sophomore Taras Wallace reached on an error by the centerfielder, which allowed Heinz to score from second base. Next batter, junior Jackie Rogers connected for a double, driving in another run and giving the Golden Lions the early advantage. Franklin Pierce notched two runs in the bottom half of the third inning as freshman Jen Ryan (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) led the inning off with a single. After Surgen reached on a fielder’s choice and Giardina singled, Knapp produced a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate Ryan. Next batter, McConnell connected for an RBI single to cut the Dowling lead to 5-2, but Dowling added four more runs over the next four innings to secure the victory. Aalto pitched three innings for the Franklin Pierce, yielding seven runs, two earned on four hits, before giving way to freshman Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg). Jacobs tossed four innings in relief for the Ravens, allowing two runs, none earned, on three hits while striking out nine. With her nine strikeouts, Jacobs now holds the all-time single season record for strikeouts with 72. She passed the old record of 68 set by Brittan Huntington in 2001. Dowling College junior pitcher Jackie Lucido tossed a complete game, allowing two earned runs on six hits, while striking out three batters and walking one to earn her fifth victory of the season.
