Sweep Of Season Over Bentley
Ravens rally late to earn 7-6 victory in game one; take nightcap 8-0

RINDGE, N.H. (April 25, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce softball team earned its first home sweep of the season as it defeated Bentley College in a Northeast-10 doubleheader this afternoon at the Franklin Pierce Softball Field. The Ravens posted a 7-6 victory in game one, before taking the nightcap 8-0.

In game one, Franklin Pierce had five batters register multiple hits as the Ravens notched seven runs on 12 hits. Sophomore Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three singles and a walk, while scoring one run and driving in two. Classmate Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) and freshman Jen Ryan (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) were both 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while freshman Jackie Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) posted a two base-hits and two RBIs.

Franklin Pierce freshman Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) went the distance on the mound for the Ravens, yielding six runs, five earned on seven hits and striking out six to earn her fourth victory of the season. Jacobs was also solid offensively, going 2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBIs.

Bentley opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as lead-off batter freshman Dina Ferreiro (Tweksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) connected for a double to right-centerfield. After a single and a walk loaded the bases, freshman Alex Hitchcock (Abington, Mass./Abington) drove in the first Falcon run with a groundball to the shortstop. Next batter, sophomore Brianna Kneeland (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) knocked home sophomore Leigh Cavanaugh (Cheshire, Conn./Tewksbury) on a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Falcons an early 2-0 advantage.

Franklin Pierce rallied in the bottom of the second to regain the lead as the Ravens connected for five consecutive singles to plate four runs. With one out, Surgen, Ryan and Jacobs each posted singles to load the bases. After the Jacobs single, Giardina belted a base-hit that plated two runs and Prybella followed with a two RBI single.   

 Bentley tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth inning and added a single run in the top of the sixth to take a 6-4 lead. The Ravens countered in the bottom half of the sixth inning as the first six Raven runners reached base. Freshman Elaine Matthews (Roslindale, Mass./Archbishop Williams) lead off the inning with a single and was followed by three consecutive singles by the trio of Surgen, Ryan, and Jacobs. The Ravens turned five hits and one walk into three runs to take a 7-6 lead and earn their tenth victory of the season.

Sophomore Kate Surgen recorded two hits in game two, including a double that drove in a pair.

In game two, Franklin Pierce registered seven hits and took advantage of five Bentley errors to post eight runs en route to their 11th victory of the season. The Ravens were led by Surgen who registered her second multiple hit game of the day. Surgen posted two hits, including a double, scored one run and knocked in three runs, while Matthews went 1-for-2 with one run scored and two RBIs.

Franklin Pierce tallied all the runs it would need in the bottom of the second inning. After a Bentley error and a single by junior Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) Matthews laid down sacrifice bunt advance runners to second and third. Surgen gave the Ravens an early lead as she laced a double driving home two. In the bottom of the third inning, Franklin Pierce notched six runs on two hits and four Falcon errors to secure the victory.

Knapp hurled the complete game shutout for Franklin Pierce, allowing eight hits and striking out three. Bentley pitcher, sophomore Diane Morrison (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) suffered the loss tossing four innings, allowing eight runs, five earned on seven hits.

Franklin Pierce (11-18-1, 4-11-1 NE-10) will be in action tomorrow as it hosts Saint Michael’s College at 3:30 p.m. Bentley College (4-31, 1-14 NE-10) will host Saint Anselm College at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
