Franklin Pierce Falls To Assumption
Greyhounds edge Ravens 2-1 in game one; post 6-1 victory in nightcap


Freshman Courtney Jacobs pitched a complete game for the Ravens in game one, allowing only two runs on five hits.

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 13, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce softball team suffered a pair of losses to Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon at Assumption College. The Greyhounds defeated the Ravens 2-1 in game one, and notched a 6-1 victory in game two to earn their 18th win of the season.

In game one, Franklin Pierce registered one run on two hits. The Ravens were led by freshmen Jackie Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and Steph Howard (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk). Prybella went 1-for-3 at the plate, with one run scored while Howard tallied a base-hit and one RBI.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the top half of the first inning, as Prybella singled to centerfield and later stole her fourth base of the year to advance to second. Two batters later, Howard laced a single to centerfield to drive in Prybella and collected her sixth RBI of the season.

Assumption countered in the bottom half of the inning, as junior Sandra Denman (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) led off the inning with a double down the right field line. With two outs in the inning, senior captain Tania Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) singled to left field to knot the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the fourth frame, Assumption plated the winning run as Palumbo recorded her second hit of the game, a homerun to left center field.  

Franklin Pierce sophomore Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) suffered the loss for the Ravens, hurling six innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven batters. Assumption College pitcher, sophomore Lauren Symonick (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) earned her fifth win of the season, tossing a complete game, two-hitter, while yielding one run and striking out nine.

Freshman Steph Howard tallied two hits and two RBIs and the Ravens doubleheader with Assumption College.

In game two, Franklin Pierce was led offensively by Howard and junior Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington). Howard went 1-for-3 at the plate, recording her second RBI on the day, while McConnell posted a base hit. Prybella registered a run for the Ravens, her ninth run scored of the season.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring again in the top of the first inning as Prybella drew a walk and stole second base. With two outs, Howard notched a single to center field, scoring Prybella.

Assumption tied the game in the bottom half of the third as Denman tripled down the right field line and later scored on a fielder’s choice. The Greyhounds sealed the victory, scoring five runs over the last two innings. Assumption notched three runs on five hits in the fifth inning, while posting two runs on two hits in the sixth.

Franklin Pierce sophomore Lindsay Knapp (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) suffered the loss for the Ravens, yielding six runs, five earned on eight hits and six walks, while striking out three. Junior Caitlyn Stazinksi (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) tossed the complete game, two-hitter for the Greyhounds to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Franklin Pierce (7-16-1, 0-9-1 NE-10) will be in action on Tuesday as they travel to Saint Anselm College at 3:30 p.m. Assumption (18-12, 7-3 NE-10) will action on Monday as it travels to American International College for a doubleheader starting at    2 p.m.
