Franklin Pierce Earns Home Split with Saint Rose

RINDGE, N.H. (April 14, 2005) – The Franklin Pierce softball team collected a doubleheader split with the College of Saint Rose this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Franklin Pierce Softball Field. After a dramatic 3-2 extra-innings victory in game one, the Ravens dropped a 10-1 decision in the nightcap.

In game one, Franklin Pierce jumped out to an early 1-0 after one inning, but the Golden Knights tied the contest with a run in the sixth frame. Saint Rose plated the go-ahead run in the top of the tenth inning, but the Ravens rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning to win the game.

Sophomore Colleen Varone (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) led the Ravens with a pair of doubles and one RBI, while freshmen Lindsay Knapp (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) and Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) each went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Freshman Jessica Pastore (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and junior Tricia Ritchie (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis) recorded a hit and a run scored for the Golden Knights.

Senior captain Amy Torla tossed a ten inning gem, allowing just one earned run on four hits in game one.

Franklin Pierce got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Giardina led-off with a bunt single and reached second base on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional). She then stole third base and scored on an overthrow by the catcher.

Saint Rose notched the equalizer in the sixth inning and took a 2-1 lead in the top of the tenth frame, when Pastore plated Ritchie with a sacrifice fly.

Trailing by a run, the Ravens put together a rally in the bottom of the inning to win the game. Freshman Nicole Leary (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Giardina. Surgen followed with a walk, and Varone delivered a two-out RBI double to knot the game at two. The Golden Knights then misplayed a Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) grounder, allowing Surgen to cross the plate with the game-winning run.

Senior captain Amy Torla (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) was superb on the mound for the Ravens. She limited Saint Rose to just one earned run on four hits in ten innings pitched. Freshman Kristen Calahan (Lagrange, N.Y./Arlington) took the loss despite allowing just one earned run in a complete game effort.
