Stonehill Takes Pair From 
Franklin Pierce
 

EASTON, Mass. (April 10, 2005) – The Franklin Pierce softball team dropped both halves of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Stonehill College in Easton, Mass. this afternoon. Stonehill earned 5-2 and 3-1 victories to even their conference record at 5-5.

            In game one, Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after three innings, but Stonehill tied the score in the top of the fourth frame and exploded for four more runs an inning later to secure the victory.

            Freshman Lauren Rappoli (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) led the Chieftains offensive attack, as she went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a pair of RBI. She also scored two runs and stole a base. Fellow freshman Jaime Ippolito (Clesea, Mass./Savio Prep) went 1-2 with two RBI, while classmate Jamie Ludwig (Trumbell, Conn./Trumbell) posted a hit, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.

            The Ravens were limited to just four hits. Sophomore Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) and freshman Taylor Kenyon (Bennington, Vt./Mt. Anthony) went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI each.

Franklin Pierce took a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the third inning. McConnell doubled in sophomore Colleen Varone (Holliston, Mass./Holliston), who had been hit by a pitch and stole second base.

            Stonehill answered with a run in the top of the fourth frame. Rappoli led off the inning with a single and stole second base. She advanced to third on a Caitlin Flanagan (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ippolito.

            The Chieftains took the lead for good in the fifth inning. Ludwig singled to plate senior Nicole Pichette (Exeter, R.I./Exeter), who had doubled and advanced to third on a Stephanie Folan (Glen Cove, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) single. Rappoli followed with a bases clearing double and scored on an Ippolito single.

            Kenyon doubled in freshman Ariana Massimilla (Littleton, N.H./Lin-Wood) in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 5-2, but Stonehill held the Ravens scoreless for the remainder of the game.

            Sophomore Tracey Cidlevich (Milton, Mass./Milton) picked up the victory on the mound for the Chieftains, allowing just one earned run in a complete game effort. Senior captain Amy Torla (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) took the loss for Franklin Pierce.

Freshman Jenna Giardina singled, stole her team-leading 14th stolen base of the year and scored the Ravens lone run in game two.

In game two, the Ravens totaled just two hits, both in the first inning. Stonehill trailed 1-0 heading into the seventh inning but rallied for three runs in their final at-bat to secure their fifth consecutive victory.

Folan went 2-for-4 at the plate, knocked in a run and stole a base to lead the Chieftain offense. Pichette recorded a hit, an RBI and a run scored, while Ippolito and Lauren Polselli (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) scored one run apiece.

Varone and freshman Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) supplied the offense for Franklin Pierce. The pair connected for the Ravens lone run in the bottom of the first inning. Giardina led off with a single and followed with her team-best 14th stolen base of the season. She then scored on a Varone single.

Stonehill notched all three of their runs in the top of the seventh frame. Pichette rapped an RBI single to tie the game and scored the game-winning run on a Franklin Pierce error with two outs. Folan singled in Polselli for an insurance run, and freshman Jessica Sachse (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley School) blanked the Ravens in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.

Sachse earned the victory with a complete game effort. She struck out three Ravens and allowed just one run on two hits. Freshman Lindsay Knapp (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) went the distance on the mound for Franklin Pierce. She suffered the loss despite allowing just one earned run.
