Franklin Pierce Splits
Home Opening Twinbill With St. Anselm
RINDGE,
N.H. (April 12, 2005) – The
Franklin Pierce softball team split its home opening doubleheader versus
Northeast-10 Conference foe Saint Anselm today at the Franklin Pierce
Softball Field in Rindge, N.H. The Ravens held on for a 4-3 win in game
one before falling 9-7 in the nightcap.
In game one, freshman Lindsay Knapp (Elmira, N.Y./Notre
Dame) went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI to lead the
Ravens offense. Sophomore Michelle McConnell (Elora,
Ontario/Centre Wellington) hit 2-for-3 with a run scored, while
freshman Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional)
added a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Classmate Nicole Burk
(Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and sophomore Colleen Varone
(Holliston, Mass./Holliston) each chipped in with a hit and a
run scored. The Hawks got solid production from senior Maria Lisa Marciano (North Reading, Mass./North Reading), who was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored. Classmate Katelyn McGrath (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) and junior Julie Pistorino (Abington, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) recorded a hit and an RBI apiece, while sophomore Jaime Sweeney (Keene, N.H./Keene) chipped in with a hit and a run scored.
Franklin Pierce scored all four of their runs in the fifth inning. The inning was highlighted by a bases loaded double by Knapp that plated Surgen, Varone and McConnell. Saint Anselm rallied for three runs in their final at-bat, but
their rally fell just short. Sweeney singled to start the inning and
Ravens hurler Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln)
walked Marciano and senior Melissa O’Connor (Belmont,
Mass./Belmont) to load the bases with one out. McGrath singled
in Sweeney to get the Hawks on the board and Marciano scored on an
error. Pistorino plated O’Connor with a sacrifice fly, bringing the
Hawks to within a run, but Lemoie got out of the inning with a
strikeout. Lemoie
allowed just two earned runs in a complete game effort, as she won her
second game of the year. Junior Brigitte June (Saratoga Springs,
N.Y./Saratoga Springs) went the distance but took the loss for
Saint Anselm.
