Rio
Grande Upends FORT
MYERS, Fla. (March 22, 2005) – The
Franklin Pierce softball team fell 10-1 to non-conference opponent Rio
Grande College tonight at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort
Myers, Fla. Junior Brandi Jones (Hamilton, Ohio) sparked
the Redwomen with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, including a
homerun and three runs scored.
Sophomore Colleen Varone (Holliston, Mass./Holliston)
collected a pair of singles, while freshmen Jenna Giardina
(Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) and Ariana Massimillia
(Littleton, N.H./Lin-Wood) each recorded singles for the Ravens.
Franklin Pierce scored their run in the second inning, when freshman Kate
Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) singled in
sophomore Nicole Burk (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand), who
had walked and advanced to third on two pass balls.
Freshman Jessica Ross (Hilliard, Ohio) went the
distance on the mound for Rio Grande, allowing just one earned run on
five hits in a winning effort. Senior captain Amy Torla
(Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) struck out four batters in a
complete game performance for the Ravens. Franklin
Pierce (1-7) will return to action tomorrow, as they continue play in
the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with non-conference contests versus
Kalamazoo College and Southern Connecticut State University at 9 a.m.
and 11 a.m. respectively. Batteries:
