Merrimack Takes Two From Franklin Pierce
Rubino blasts homers in both games

RINDGE, N.H. (May 3, 2005) – The Franklin Pierce softball team dropped a pair of games versus Merrimack College in Northeast-10 Conference action in Rindge, N.H. this afternoon. In game one, the Warriors collected ten hits in a 9-0 mercy rule victory. Merrimack pounded out ten more hits en route to a 5-1 victory in game two.

In the first game, Merrimack erupted for six runs on six hits in the bottom of the first frame. Junior Jacqueline Rubino (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) highlighted the inning with a two-run double. Sophomore Kristen Vadala (Salem, N.H./Salem) rapped an RBI triple, while classmates Clarissa Lewis (Peabody, Mass./Peabody), Emily Cutler (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro) and Shannon Caraviello (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex Regional) delivered run-scoring hits.

Rubino blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to ice the game for the Warriors. She plated junior Stephanie Simon (Windham, N.H./Salem) and Lewis, who had singled.

Rubino finished the game hitting 2-for-3 with five RBI and a pair of runs scored. Freshman Kelly Knox (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits en route to her seventh win of the season.

Franklin Pierce had two hits in the game. Sophomore Colleen Varone (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) ripped a double to left center, and classmate Kamla Taylor (Sugarland, Texas/Kempner) notched an infield single. Freshman Lindsay Knapp (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) took the loss on the mound for the Ravens.

Freshman Jenna Giardina went 2-for-3 and stole a pair of bases in game two.

The Ravens got on the board first in the second game, scoring a run in the top of the third stanza. Sophomore Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) plated freshman Taylor Kenyon (Bennington, Vt./Mt. Anthony) with a one-out single to center.

Merrimack answered with a pair of runs in the bottom the third. Simon got things started with a double to left-center. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and Lewis knocked her in with a grounder to second base. Rubino followed with a solo homerun, her second of the day.

The Warriors put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth frame. Rubino led off with a double to left field and Cutler followed with a walk. Carviello loaded the bases with a single to center field, and senior Jennifer Roberge (Andover, Mass./Andover) drilled a towering single off the center field fence to score two runs. Vadala plated the third run of the inning with a single up the middle.

Rubino finished the game with a homer, a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Roberge had two hits and a pair of RBI, while Simon went 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Junior Courtney Wheeler (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) picked up her first win of the season for Merrimack. She scattered five hits and allowed just one in five innings pitched. Freshman Clarice Pepper (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) pitched tow scoreless innings for the save.

McConnell went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while freshman Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) went 2-for-3 and stole a pair of bases for the Ravens. Senior captain Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) took the loss.

Franklin Pierce (9-29, 7-19 NE-10) wraps up its season with a pair of Northeast-10 Conference tilts tomorrow. The Ravens will host Assumption College and Saint Michael’s College in makeup games. Merrimack finishes up its regular season schedule tomorrow, when it hosts Southern Connecticut State University for a pair of league games starting at 3:00 p.m.
