Pierce Swept by Bryant in SMITHFIELD,
R.I. (March 31, 2005) – The
Franklin Pierce softball team opened up their Northeast-10 Conference
slate with a pair of losses to Bryant University today in Smithfield,
R.I. The Bulldogs blanked the Ravens 9-0 in the first half of the
doubleheader and picked up a 7-4 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, Bryant out-hit Franklin Pierce 13-4 en route to a
five inning mercy rule victory.
Senior Deidre Kittredge (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Merian)
blasted a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning, and
the Bulldogs never looked back. Kittredge went 2-for-3 in the game with
two RBI and a run scored, while sophomore Amanda Gagne (Wilbraham,
Mass./Minnechaug Regional) was a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI
and a pair of runs. Sophomore Lindsay Connor (West Haven,
Conn./West Haven) totaled three runs in a 3-for-4 performance,
and junior Jordan Dargon (Trumbell, Conn./St. Joseph)
added a hit and two RBI. Senior Diane Cummings (Westwood,
Mass./Westwood) chipped in with two hits and an RBI for the
Bulldogs.
The Ravens received multiple hit efforts from freshmen Jenna
Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) and Kate Surgen
(Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional). Giardina went 2-for-3,
while Surgen was a perfect 2-for-2. Freshmen
Janine Enos (Wareham, Mass./Wareham) earned the victory,
as she struck out four batters in four innings of work. Classmate Stephanie
Miller (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley) relieved Enos in the
fourth inning to complete the shutout. Senior captain Christine
Boutiette (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) suffered the loss on the
mound for Franklin Pierce. Batteries: Bryant 9, Franklin Pierce

continued where they left off in the nightcap. Sophomore Briana
Durborow (Ringoes,
N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) hit 3-for-3 with two runs and
an RBI, while Kittredge went 3-for-4, knocked in three runs and scored a
run. Gagne, Dargon and Cummings each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Leading
the way for the Ravens was sophomore Michelle McConnell (Elora,
Ontario/Centre Wellington), who went 1-for-2 with a double, two
runs scored and an RBI. Surgen delivered a hit and an RBI, while
sophomore Kamla Taylor (Sugarland, Texas/Kempner) chipped
in with a hit and a run. The
game was called due to darkness in the bottom of the sixth inning with
no outs and two Bulldogs on base. Cummings picked up the victory, as she
struck out four Ravens in 5.1 innings of relief work for the hosts.
Ravens senior captain Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln)

None out, two runners LOB when the game ended. Franklin Pierce (2-12, 0-2 NE-10) will take the diamond again on Saturday, when they travel to Dowling College for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Bryant (5-6, 3-0 NE-10) hosts Conference foe American International College on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at noon. |
