Franklin Pierce Falls to
Assumption in Season Finale, 8-3

RINDGE, N.H. (May 4, 2005) – The Franklin Pierce softball team suffered an 8-3 loss to Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption College in their final game of the season this evening in Rindge, N.H. The Greyhounds tallied 11 hits and capitalized on four Raven errors to earn a spot in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament.

Sophomores Stephanie Capone (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) and Stephanie Brooks (Reading, Mass./Reading) strung together two consecutive doubles in the top of the second inning to give Assumption a 1-0 advantage.

Franklin Pierce answered with three runs in the bottom the second. Freshman Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) and senior captain Jessica Heaney (Greenport, N.Y./Greenport) drew walks, and freshman Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) cleared the bases with an inside-the-park homerun to left field.

The Greyhounds notched a pair of runs in the top of the third to knot the game at three and took the lead for good with a three-run fifth. They padded their lead with two more runs in the sixth, as they cruised to victory.

Freshman Taylor Kenyon rapped a double on Wednesday.

Brooks went 1-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBI to lead a balanced offensive attack for Assumption. Sophomore Sarah Taglienti (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) had two hits and two runs, while junior Tania Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) registered a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Capone was 2-for-3 with a run, and freshman Korina Salafia (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) chipped in with a hit and an RBI.

Giardina led Franklin Pierce with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, including a homer, three RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Freshman Taylor Kenyon (Bennington, Vt./Mt. Anthony) rapped a double, and classmate Lindsay Knapp (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) had a hit for the Ravens.

Brooks got the start on the mound for the Greyhounds. She surrendered all three Franklin Pierce runs in two innings of work before giving way to junior Shalynn Napolitano (Lawrence, Mass./Fellowship Christian), who pitched five shutout innings en route to her 11th victory of the season. Knapp was the hard-luck loser for the Ravens, as she allowed just one earned run in 4.2 innings pitched.

Franklin Pierce rounds out its season with an overall record of 9-23 and a league mark of 7-20. Assumption (18-19, 13-14 NE-10) has earned the #6 seed in the Conference Tournament and will take on third-seeded Bryant University at Le Moyne College on Friday.
