Assumption
Uses Big Ninth to Defeat Franklin Pierce, 9-2 RINDGE,
N.H. (April 30, 2005)
– The Franklin Pierce softball team suffered a 9-2 extra-innings
setback versus Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption College this
afternoon in Rindge, N.H. The second game of the doubleheader was
postponed due to rain. No makeup date has been announced. Franklin
Pierce jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, when
sophomore Colleen Varone (Holliston, Mass./Holliston)
blasted a two-run homerun to plate classmate Kamla Taylor (Sugarland,
Texas/Kempner), who had singled. Assumption
answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Stephanie
Capone (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) walked to start the inning. She
stole second and third and scored on classmate Sarah Leary’s
(Seymour, Conn./Seymour) single to left field. Junior Lisa
Castillo (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) doubled to center field to
plate Leary and knot the game at two. The
Greyhounds broke the tie with seven runs in the top of the ninth inning.
They took advantage of four Raven errors in the frame to win their third
straight contest. Junior Tania Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy
Name) highlighted the inning with a two-run double, while
sophomore Sarah Taglienti (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) added a
run-scoring single. Taglienti
went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the offensive charge
for Assumption. Palumbo hit 2-for-4, knocked in a pair of runs and
scored once, while Capone added a hit and two runs scored. Junior
Shalynn Napolitano (Lawrence, Mass./Fellowship Christian)
got the start on the mound for the Greyhounds. She allowed two runs in
five innings before giving way to sophomore Caitlin Stazinski (Westboro,
Mass./Westboro), who pitched four scoreless innings en route to
the win. Senior captain Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln)
