Franklin
Pierce Drops Final FORT
MYERS, Fla. (March 24, 2005) – The
Franklin Pierce softball dropped a pair of non-conference games today,
as they wrapped up play at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort
Myers, Fla. The Ravens were edged 4-3 by Fredonia State in their first
contest and fell 7-1 to Saint Thomas University in their second game of
the day. In
game one, Franklin Pierce scored once in the first inning and added two
more runs in the third frame to take a 3-0 advantage. Fredonia State
battled back for a run in the fourth and scored three times in the sixth
to take the lead for good. Freshman
Eileen Ferrari (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) got
things started for the Blue Devils with an RBI single in the fourth
inning, and junior Staci Weidert (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) plated
the game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning to cap off the
rally. Freshman
Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) fueled the
Ravens offensive attack with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. She
stole three bases and scored two runs, while sophomore Michelle
McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) hit 2-for-4,
including a double and two RBI. Senior
captain Amy Torla (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) got the
start on the mound for Franklin Pierce. She took the loss despite
allowing just one earned run on five hits in a complete game effort.
In
the second game, Saint Thomas got solid performances out of senior Kristen
Miranda (Miami. Fla.) and junior Jaime Beucke (St. Peters,
Mo.), who totaled five hits on the day. Miranda posted a 3-for-4
performance at the plate, including a double, two singles, three RBI and
a run scored, while Beucke was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Sophomore
Kamla Taylor (Sugarland, Texas/Kempner) was 2-for-3 with a
double and freshman Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire
Regional) chipped in with a hit and the Ravens lone run of the
contest. Junior
Sarah Mowczko (Tonawanda, N.Y.) picked up the victory, as
she was dominant on the mound for Saint Thomas. She limited Franklin
Pierce to just two hits in four innings of work before giving way to
sophomore Melissa Steuber (Plantation, Fla.), who pitched
the final two innings. Batteries:

Pierce (2-10) will return to action on Tuesday, as they open up their
Northeast-10 Conference slate with a doubleheader at Bryant beginning at
3 p.m. |
