Ravens blank Kalamazoo, fall to Southern Connecticut

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 23, 2005) – The Franklin Pierce softball team split a pair of games today at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The Ravens posted an 8-0 mercy rule victory over Kalamazoo College in their first contest of the day, but fell 6-2 to Southern Connecticut in their second contest of the day.

In game one, freshman Taylor Kenyon (Bennington, Vt./Mt. Blue) exploded for six RBI. She went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and a run scored. Classmate Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) registered a 2-for-4 performance, scored two runs and stole a base. Freshman, Ariana Massimilla (Littleton, N.H./Lin-Wood) added an RBI double, while sophomore Kamla Taylor (Sugarland, Texas/Kempner) was 1-for-1 , with three runs, two stolen bases and an RBI.

Freshman Becky Aalto (Hubbardston, Mass./Gardner) allowed just four hits over five innings pitched en route to her first collegiate victory on the mound for Franklin Pierce. Kalamazoo junior pitcher Elyse Rapp (Parchment, Mich./Parchment) went the distance, allowing eight earned runs in a losing effort.

 In the second game, sophomore Lindsey Castano (Oakdale, Conn./ECSU/Motville) belted a three-run homerun in the top of the first inning, and Southern Connecticut never looked back.


Sophomore Michelle McConnell totaled two hits and an RBI versus Southern Connecticut.

 Castano also added an RBI single in the fifth frame to cap off a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Classmate Tanya Risucci (Waterbury, Conn./NVCC/Kennedy) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while senior Jaime Johnson (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) chipped in with a two-run single for the Owls.

            The Ravens got solid production out of a pair of sophomores, Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario, Centre Wellington) and Colleen Varone (Holliston, Mass./Holliston). McConnell notched a 2-for-3 performance, including an RBI single, while Varone added an RBI triple and scored a run. Taylor chipped in with a hit and a run scored.

            Junior Kelly Brenner (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) earned the victory on the mound for Southern Connecticut. She went the distance, striking out six batters and surrendering just two earned runs. Senior captain Christine Boutiette (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) suffered the loss despite striking out six batters and allowing just one earned run in a complete game effort.
