Southern Connecticut Takes Two from 
Franklin Pierce

Owls defeat Ravens 11-1 and 9-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (April 25, 2004) – The Franklin Pierce softball team fell to Southern Connecticut 11-1 and 9-0 in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader this afternoon.

            In the opening contest, the game was scoreless through three and a half innings until the Owls posted six runs in the bottom of the fourth.

            The Ravens managed to take a run back in the fifth as freshman Colleen Varone (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) drove in the Ravens lone run of the day with an RBI single, but the Owls then answered with five runs in the sixth to secure the win. Sophomore Kelly Brenner (Meriden, Conn./Hamden) hit 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI, while junior Jess Hernandez (Milford, Conn./Foran) and senior Jill Yakushewich (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) both went 1-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

            Brenner picked up the win (7-9) in game one, going the full six innings and allowing one run on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Junior Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) took the loss (2-7) for the Ravens and went 5.1 innings allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits with one walk and three strikeouts.


Freshman Lindsey Souza went 2-2 in game two against the Owls and 4-5 over the two games.

In game two, Owls pitcher Katie Donovan (Winsted, Conn./Gilbert School) held the Ravens to just two hits over five innings with three walks and three strikeouts to improve to 4-13 on the season. Junior Amy Torla (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) took the loss and falls to 1-7 on the year and allowed nine runs (four earned) on 11 hits with three walks and three strikeouts in four innings.

            Freshman Lindsey Souza (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) registered both hits for Franklin Pierce, going 2-2 at the plate in game two and 4-5 on the afternoon.

            Senior Christian Stoddard (Groton, Conn./Fitch) went 4-4 in the contest to lead the Owls offense and registered two runs scored and two RBI.

            The Ravens (10-22-1, 4-20 NE-10) travel to UMass Lowell tomorrow for a Northeast-10 doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m., while Southern Connecticut (11-29, 9-17 NE-10) end its season tomorrow with a doubleheader at Le Moyne starting at 3 p.m.
