Takes Two from Franklin Pierce

Ravens fall to Penmen 2-1 in eight innings and 1-0

RINDGE, N.H. (April 22, 2004) - Southern New Hampshire narrowly edged out Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader this afternoon as the Ravens fell 2-1 in eight innings in game one and 1-0 in game two.

In game one of the twinbill, the Penmen were first to score as sophomore Jessica Rida (Worthington, Mass./Woburn) singled and scored in a fielder’s choice in the fourth inning.

However, Franklin Pierce was able to take the run back and tie the game at one in the fifth with an RBI single from freshman Lindsey Souza (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) to plate junior Christine Boutiette (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) who reached with a leadoff single.
But in the top of the eighth, Southern New Hampshire managed to score the game-winner on an infield single by Rida to bring home Mel Keeler (Concord, N.H./Concord). Rida went 2-for-4 in the game with an RBI and a run scored.


Sophomore Dana Wetzel was the lone Raven to post multiple hits in game two; she finished the day hitting a combined 4-6.

Keeler threw eight innings and allowed one run, scattering five hits with one walk and five strikeouts to improve to 9-6 on the season for the Penmen. Junior Amy Torla (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) pitched three innings and allowed one run on three hits with one walk and one strikeout before leaving the game with an injury. Classmate Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) relieved her and took the loss, allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks in five innings of work.

In the second game of the afternoon, Southern New Hampshire plated the only run of the contest in the sixth inning as freshman Tara Moriarty (Randolph, Mass./Randolph) reached on a fielder’s choice then scored on an error.

Sophomore Dana Wetzel (Riverdale, N.J./Pompton Lakes) was the lone Raven to post multiple hits in the game; she finished the day hitting a combined 4-6.

Keeler picked up her second win of the afternoon (10-6), throwing seven shutout innings and allowing seven hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Boutiette started the game for the Franklin Pierce, went two innings and allowed no runs on three hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Lemoie relieved her and took the loss (2-5) despite allowing just one unearned run on three hits.

The Ravens (10-18-1, 4-16 NE-10) will play their final home doubleheader of the season on Saturday against Pace beginning at 1 p.m. Southern New Hampshire (17-13, 13-7 NE-10) will travel to Assumption on Saturday for a twinbill beginning at 1 p.m.
