Bentley
Sweeps Franklin Pierce
In the first game of the afternoon, Bentley took a 1-0 lead in
the first inning on a solo homerun from Caroline Ciummei (Acton,
Mass./Boxboro).
Franklin Pierce answered with four runs in the fourth,
highlighted by a two-RBI single by Bianca Balassone (Cranston,
R.I./Lasalle Academy) to score senior
captain Brooke Remington (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony)
and freshman Lindsey Souza (Braintree, Mass./Braintree).
However, Bentley took the runs back in the fifth and sixth; Christen
Franey (Abington, Mass./Abington) led off in the fifth inning
and later stole home. The Falcons then tied the game on back-to-back
home runs by Jennifer Picardo (Medfield, Mass./Medfield)
and Ciummei.
Bentley went on to break the game open with a five runs on five
hits in the seventh. Franklin Pierce cut the lead to four with a run
in the bottom of the inning as Balassone singled in junior Jessica
Heaney (Greenport, N.Y./Greenport), but the Ravens could not
overcome the deficit.
Leah Wesemann (Middleton, Mass./Masconomet Regional)
(5-5) earned the win for the Falcons, pitching seven innings and
allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits with no walks and four
strikeouts. Senior captain Kalene Wotton (Westminster,
Mass./Oakmont) (5-3) went six innings and allowed nine runs,
six earned, on 11 hits with one walk and four strikeouts and took the
loss for Franklin Pierce. In game two, Bentley once again posted runs in the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by Picardo.
The
Ravens went on to score three in the bottom of the first as junior
Megan Welcome (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) walked and
then scored on a RBI double by Michelle Derochers
(Billerica, Mass./Billerica), Derochers scored on an error and
sophomore Dana Wetzel (Riverdale, N.J./Pompton Lakes)
drove in Balassone.
This would all the runs Franklin Pierce would plate, however,
as the Falcons went on to score nine unanswered runs, including a
six-run fourth, and cruised to the win.
Ballasone finished
the afternoon with three RBI and a run scored on two hits. Derochers
hit 4-for-7 on the day with two RBI and a run scored.
For Bentley, Picardo went a combined 4-5, including two home
runs with four runs scored and five RBI and Lisa Tisbert
(Andover, Mass./Andover) was 4-8 with a home run, three runs
scored and four RBI over the two games.
Sophomore Maureen McGinn (St. Albans Vt./Bellows Free
Academy) (1-4) picked up the win in game two, going six
innings and allowing one earned run on four hits with one walk and two
strikeouts. Junior Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln)
took the loss (2-3) as she threw four innings and allowed nine runs
(three earned) on nine hits with two walks and one strikeout.
The Ravens (10-14-1, 4-12 NE-10) continue their homestand on
Wednesday with a doubleheader against Saint Michael’s beginning at
3:30 p.m. Bentley (9-19, 6-10 NE-10) next hosts Saint Anselm on
