Pierce Drops Two Against Merrimack
In game one of the twinbill, Merrimack started off with a
commanding 5-0, lead after four innings before the Ravens managed to
cut the deficit to four as senior captain Brooke
Remington (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony) doubled then scored
on an RBI single by classmate Lauren Chenausky (Royalston,
Mass./Athol) in the fifth.
The Warriors answered with a run in the sixth and added another
run in the seventh to climb to a 7-1 advantage, but the Ravens would
not go quietly as Remington walked and senior
Michelle Derochers (Billerica, Mass./Billerica)
singled to start the bottom of the seventh. Then with one out in the
inning and two runners aboard, freshman Bianca Balassone
(Cranston, R.I./Lasalle Academy) homered, cutting the lead to
three. Balassone was 1-for-4 at the dish in game one with three RBIs
and a run scored, Remington went 1-2 with two runs scored and
Chenausky was 2-4 with an RBI.
Merrimack pitcher Michelle Ridings (North Reading,
Mass./North Reading) held off the Ravens, however, to improve
to 3-6 on the year. Ridings allowed four runs, on four hits with four
strikeouts in seven innings. Junior Amy Torla (Haverhill,
Mass./Haverhill) dropped to 1-5 for Franklin Pierce, allowing
five runs (four earned) on six hits with one walk and no strikeouts in
3.2 innings of work. Senior captain Kalene Wotton (Westminster,
Mass./Oakmont) relieved her and allowed two runs on four hits
in 3.1 innings with four walks and one strikeout.
Junior Kristen Vadala (Salem, N.H./Salem) led the
charge for the Warriors, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an
RBI. Jen Roberge (Andover, Mass./Andover) and Jackie
Rubino (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) each added two RBIs and
Rubino also scored a run.
In the second game of the afternoon, Franklin Pierce took a 1-0
lead after Derochers drove in junior
Megan Welcome (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) in the first
inning.
The Warriors, however, were able to post all the runs they
would need with a three-run fourth as Rubino drove in two RBIs with a
triple and then scored on a passed ball.
The Ravens managed to plate one more run in the fourth with an
RBI single from freshman Michelle McConnell (Elora,
Ontario/Centre Wellington) to bring in Chenausky. The Ravens (10-12-1, 4-10 NE-10) continue their homestand tomorrow with a doubleheader against Bentley beginning at 3:30 p.m. Merrimack (16-10, 7-4 NE-10) travels to Saint Michael’s tomorrow; its twinbill also begins at 3:30 p.m. |
