Franklin Pierce Splits 
With Saint Rose

Ravens win game one 5-4 in nine innings, 
fall 4-3 in game two

TROY, N.Y. (April 15, 2004) -
Franklin Pierce split a doubleheader with the College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference softball action this evening. The Ravens won the opening contest in nine innings on a solo home run by senior captain Brooke Remington (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony) before being edged out by the Golden Knights, 4-3 in game two.

In game one, the Ravens jumped out to an early two-run lead in the top of the first as senior Lauren Chenausky (Royalston, Mass./Athol) knocked a two-RBI single to bring home Remington who also singled and classmate Michelle Derochers (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) who reached with a walk.

Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) then made it a 4-0 game for Franklin Pierce in the third, driving in two runs with a single to right field after the Ravens opened the inning with back-to-back hits by Derochers and Chenausky.

The Golden Knights, however, began chipping away at the Franklin Pierce lead as Vicky Camaj (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) had a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth and later scored on a groundout. Saint Rose then rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Camaj began the seventh with a triple down the left field line and Stephanie Cietek (Albany, N.Y./Bishop Maginn) belted a two-out, two-run homer, which brought the Golden Knights within a run. Michelle Nolette (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) followed Cietek with a triple and later scored in a wild pitch to knot the score at four runs apiece.


Senior captain Brooke Remington went 3-8 on the evening with two runs scored and two RBI including a game-winning homer.

With one out, Remington belted a solo homer in the ninth for the game winner for the Ravens. Senior captain Kalene Wotton (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) (3-3) held Saint Rose scoreless in the bottom of the inning, picking up the win as she pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief and held the Golden Knights to just one hit while picking up one strikeout with one walk. Tricia Ritchie (Port Jervis, N.Y.Port Jervis) (2-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on 13 hits in nine innings with one walk and one strikeout.

The Ravens once again began game two with a lead after junior Christine Boutiette (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) scored on a sacrifice fly by Remington, putting the Ravens out in front 1-0 in the third inning.

Saint Rose answered, however, with a three-run fifth as Cietek singled then scored on an error and Kimberly Frisbee (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie) belted a two-run shot, giving the Golden Knights a 3-1 advantage.

Franklin Pierce managed to tie the score in the top of the sixth, starting the inning with back-to-back hits. Freshman Bianca Balassone (Cranston, R.I./Lasalle Academy) drove in Chenausky and then eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by McConnell. Chenausky went 5-for-7 over the two games with two runs scored and two RBI and McConnell was 2-6 with three RBI, while Remington hit 3-8 with two runs scored and two RBI.

The Golden Knights came back in the bottom half of the inning and plated the winning run with an RBI triple from Cietek. She finished the evening for St. Rose hitting 3-8 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI (three in game two).

Julie Seifts (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) (1-4) allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings with two walks and seven strikeouts and picked up the win for Saint Rose. Junior Amy Torla (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) dropped to 1-4 on the year, pitching six innings and allowing one earned run on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Franklin Pierce (9-9-1, 3-7 NE-10) returns to action Saturday when it travels to Le Moyne for a Conference doubleheader beginning at noon. Saint Rose (6-14, 2-8 NE-10) takes on Southern Connecticut tomorrow at home at 3 p.m.
