Shuts Down Stonehill

Ravens Blank Chieftains 4-0 and 2-0

EASTON, MASS. (April 12, 2004) –
The Franklin Pierce softball team shutout Stonehill over two games, winning 4-0 and 2-0 in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon.

            Game one was scoreless through four until sophomore Ashley Milan (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) scored for the Ravens on an error after reaching with a single. Senior Michelle Derochers (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) then drove in classmate, captain Brooke Remington (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony) with an RBI double for Franklin Pierce’s second run of the inning.

            Freshman Colleen Varone (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) began the sixth for the Ravens with a double and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly by classmate Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) to put Franklin Pierce out to a three-run lead. In the seventh, Remington scored the fourth and final run for the Ravens on an RBI single by senior Lauren Chenausky (Royalston, Mass./Athol).


Junior Courtney Lemoie threw seven scoreless innings and allowed five hits with six strikeouts to pick up a win.

Senior captain Kalene Wotton (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) picked up her third win of the season in a complete game shutout effort, allowing just four hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. Jessica Hamill (Saugus, Mass./Pope John XXIII) (0-4) took the loss for the Chieftains; she allowed one earned run on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

            In the second game of the doubleheader, the Ravens edged Stonehill 2-0. Franklin Pierce took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when sophomore Dana Wetzel (Riverdale, N.J./Pompton Lakes) scored on an error after reaching with a single. Wetzel then brought home Chenausky with a sacrifice fly in the sixth to plate the second run of the game.

            Junior Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) threw seven scoreless innings and allowed five hits with six strikeouts and no walks in a winning effort for Franklin Pierce. Chieftains’ hurler Tracey Cidlevich (Milton, Mass./Milton) also went the distance and allowed one earned run on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts as she falls to 2-6 on the season.

            The Franklin Pierce (8-8-1, 2-6 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow when it travels to Saint Anselm for a Conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. Stonehill (3-15, 1-9 NE-10) next hosts Merrimack on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
