Ravens slam SUNY-Potsdam 13-0, 
edge St. Michael’s 3-1

FORT MYERS, FLA. (March 18, 2004) –
The Franklin Pierce softball team picked up back-to-back wins today with victories against SUNY-Potsdam and Saint Michael’s in Fort Myers, Florida.

            In the first game of the day, the Ravens pummeled SUNY-Potsdam 13-0. Freshman catcher Colleen Varone (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) led the charge as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with a two-run homer, three runs scored and three RBI. Senior captain Brooke Remington (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony) was 2-2 at the dish with a double, three runs scored and two stolen bases. Freshman Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) hit 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while senior Michelle Derochers (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) was 2-3 with two runs scored.


Freshman Colleen Varone went 4-5 over the two games with four runs scored, four RBI and a two-run homer.

Junior Christine Boutiette (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) pitched a complete game shutout and picked up the win for the Ravens, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts. Melissa Frechette (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) suffered the loss for the Bears as she went five innings allowing 13 runs, five earned, on 11 hits with seven walks, four strikeouts and four wild pitches.

Senior captain Kalene Wotton picked up a win against Saint Michael's.

In its second game, Franklin Pierce jumped out to an early two-run lead in the first, which sealed the 3-1 win over Saint Michael’s. Varone was 2-2 with an RBI and a run scored, Derochers went 1-2 with two runs scored and a stolen base, and sophomore Dana Wetzel (Riverdale, N.J./Pompton Cokes) was 2-2 at the plate.      

            Senior captain Kalene Wotton (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) pitched a complete game and allowed one run on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

            Heather Chamberlin (Danville, Vt./Danville) threw four innings for the Purple Knights and allowed two runs on two hits and took the loss

            Franklin Pierce (4-1-1) returns to action tomorrow with games against Richard Stockton, Purdue-North Central and Saint Thomas.
