Franklin Pierce Splits Twinbill

FORT MYERS, FLA. (March 14, 2004) -
The Franklin Pierce softball team fell to Cardinal Stritch, 9-8 in eight innings and followed up with a 3-2 win over Purdue-North Central in its second game of the afternoon today in Fort Myers, Florida.

        With two runs in both the first and third innings, the Wolves jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the Ravens answered with seven runs over the fourth and fifth innings. Cardinal Stritch then knotted the score at seven apiece with a three-run sixth to send the game to extra innings and took a two-run lead in the top of the eighth, which Franklin Pierce could not overcome.

        Senior Lauren Chenausky (Royalston, Mass./Athol) led the Ravens’ offense with a three-RBI triple; classmate Brooke Remington (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony) was 3-for-5 at the dish with a run scored and two RBI, while freshman Lindsey Souza (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) went 2-3 with a triple and two runs scored. 

        Junior Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) started on the mound for Franklin Pierce and went 5.2 innings, allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits with one walk. Amy Torla (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) relieved her and took the loss. Torla threw 2.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Senior captain Brooke Remington was a combined 5-9 with two runs scored and two RBI over the Ravens two games this afternoon.

In its second game of the afternoon, Franklin Pierce notched a 3-2 come-from-behind win with a three-run seventh inning. Freshman catcher Bianca Balassone (Cranston, R.I./Lasalle Academy) was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, classmate Colleen Varone (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) went 2-3 at the dish and Remington was 2-4 with a run scored.          

        Junior Christine Boutiette (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) pitched a complete game and picked up the victory. She allowed two runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

        Jill Kiemach (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) took the loss for the Panthers as she went seven innings, allowed three unearned runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout.

        Franklin Pierce (2-1-1) returns to action with a game against Teikyo Post tomorrow at 9 a.m. followed by a matchup with St. Michael’s at 1 p.m.
