Wotton Ties Program Strikeout Record, 
Torla Throws One-Hit Shutout

FORT MYERS, FLA. (March 14, 2004) - The Franklin Pierce softball team recorded a 3-3 tie against Teikyo Post and in Fort Myers, Fla. today as Kalene Wotton (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Reg.) recorded her 141st career strikeout to match Kara Hofsaes’ total for the program record and in the nightcap, the Ravens defeated New England College 4-0.

        The Ravens opened up the afternoon with a 3-3 tie against Teikyo Post.  Freshman Colleen Varone (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) went 1-for-4 with a run scored, senior Michelle Derochers (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) was 1-3 with a run scored and sophomore Dana Wetzel (Riverdale, N.J./Pompton Lakes) went 1-3 with an RBI.

        Wotton went nine innings and allowed three runs, all earned, on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Crista Holtom allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts for Teikyo Post.

Sophomore Dana Wetzel went 1-2 with an RBI against Teikyo Post and 1-2 with two runs scored against New England College.

Franklin Pierce then took the nightcap against New England College, 4-0. Amy Torla (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) threw a complete game one-hit shutout to help lead the Ravens to the win.

        Ashley Milan (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) led the Franklin Pierce offense as she went 2-3 at the plate, including a double, with three RBI. Wetzel was 1-2 on the evening with two runs scored and senior Lauren Chenausky (Royalston, Mass./Athol) went 1-3 with an RBI.

        Torla allowed only one hit, no runs, in seven innings with nine strikeouts and no walks to pick up the win. Katie Harmon pitched six innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

        Franklin Pierce (1-0-1) faces Cardinal Stritch Monday at 1 p.m. followed by a game against Purdue-North Central at 4 p.m.
