Franklin Pierce Drops Pair RINDGE, N.H. (April 10, 2004) - The Franklin Pierce softball team dropped a pair of Northeast-10 Conference games to Bryant College, 1-0 and 4-2, this afternoon. In game one, the Ravens fell 1-0 to the Bulldogs after Bryant managed to snag the only run of the game in the first inning. Lindsay Conner (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) and Deidre Kittredge (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) each reached with walks and advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Jordan Dargon (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph’s) then drove in Connor for the only run of the game with an RBI double. The Ravens threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with three singles, but could not plate a run, however, as Nicole Keene (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) held Franklin Pierce to just five hits in a complete game shutout win with no walks and five strikeouts. Junior Christine Boutiette (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) (2-2) went seven innings, allowed one run on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts and took the loss.
The Ravens finally began to solve the Bulldogs' pitching in game two of the twin-bill, staking a 1-0 lead off of a two-out RBI triple by Brooke Remington (Bennington, Vt./ Mount Anthony) that plated Meghan Welcome (Haverhill, Mass./ Haverhill) in the second inning. Bryant squared it up at 1-1 in the fourth, though, when Nikki Ingalls (Westford, Mass./ Westford Academy) scored from third on an error by Ravens catcher Colleen Varone (Holliston, Mass./ Holliston). The Ravens regained the lead in the fifth as Bianca Balassone (Cranston, R.I./ Lasalle Academy) drove in second baseman Michelle Derochers (Billerica, Mass./ Billerica) with a two-out RBI single, shortly after Remington was thrown out tring to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of senior first baseman Lauren Chenausky (Royalston, Mass./ Athol). Franklin Pierce carried the lead into the seventh inning, only to see the Bulldogs plate the game's final three runs in their last at-bats. Second baseman Carly Muise (Hanson, Mass./ Whitman-Hanson) and leftfielder Conner led off the inning with back-to-back singles, followed by an RBI double by centerfielder Amanda Wilbur (Lakeville, Mass./ Apponequet) that brought home Muise. Conner then came around to score on a passed ball, and Wilbur crossed the plate on a ground out by Kittredge. Ravens junior starting pitcher Amy Torla (Haverhill, Mass./ Haverhill) allowed four runs, striking out four in six-plus innings. Senior Kalene Wotton (Westminster, Mass./ Oakmont) finished the game for Franklin Pierce, picking up the final three outs of the game. Junior Diane Cummings (Westwood, Mass./ Westwood) pitched the complete game for Bryant, striking out one and allowing two earned runs. The Ravens return to action this Monday, April 12th, when they travel to Stonehill College for a doubleheader starting at 3:30pm. |
