Greyhounds defeat Ravens, 6-1 and 12-5

WORCESTER, MASS. (April 8, 2004) –Franklin Pierce fell 6-1 and 12-5 in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader against Assumption College at Marois Field this afternoon.

            In game one, Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but Assumption answered with three in the bottom of the inning then tacked on insurance runs in the fourth and fifth.

            Sandra Denman (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Assumption and Lisa Castillo (Lawrence, Mass./Methuen) was 3-4 with a double and a run scored.

            Junior Jessica Heaney (Greenport, N.Y./Greenport) provided a bright spot in the Ravens offense, going 3-3 with a run scored.

Senior pitcher Kalene Wotton (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) dropped to 2-2  with the loss. She pitched six innings and allowed five earned runs on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Shalynn Napolitano (Lawrence, Mass./Fellowship Christian) picked up the win for the Greyhounds, allowing one run on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

            In the second game of the afternoon, the Greyhounds scored six runs in the bottom of the first, but Franklin Pierce climbed within one after a five-run second. However, Assumption sealed the victory by scoring four in the third and two in the fourth.

            Beth Hordern (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) and Kelly Gosler (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) led Assumption’s hitters, both going 2-3, Hordern with two runs scored and Gosler with a run and an RBI. Denman followed and was 1-3 with two runs and Tania Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) belted a two-run homer.

            Senior captain Brooke Remington (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony) led the Ravens with a 3-4 performance, including a double, with an RBI and stolen base. Freshman Bianca Balassone (Cranston, R.I./Lasalle Academy) was 2-3 with an RBI and classmate Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) also hit 2-3 with a stolen base. Colleen Varone (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) drilled a two-run double for Franklin Pierce and scored a run.

            Junior Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) (1-2) took the loss for the Ravens in two innings of work. She allowed six runs (four earned) on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Napolitano earned her second win of the afternoon as she pitched 4.2 innings of four-hit shutout relief, walking three and striking out four.

            Franklin Pierce (6-8-1, 0-4 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Bryant College at 1 p.m. Assumption (5-3, 5-3 NE-10) will face American International at home on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
