Pierce Suffers Second Sweep N. ANDOVER, MASS. (April 13, 2003) - The Franklin Pierce softball team suffered their second-straight sweep, falling to Merrimack College 7-5 in game one and 4-0 in the night cap, in Northeast-10 Conference softball action this afternoon. In game one, the Ravens were led by junior Michelle Derochers (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) who went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI. Sophomore Meg Welcome (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) and senior Julie Haight (Fort Montgomery, N.Y./O'Neill) both went 2-4 with a run scored. Franklin Pierce opened up the game with a run in the top of the first, but the Warriors fought back as junior Haven Wynne smacked a two-run double with the bases loaded to cut the Ravens lead to one. Wynne extended the lead to two when she was moved to third on a Gina Bertelli bunt and later scored on a Franklin Pierce error. The Ravens pulled ahead two innings later when Haight doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a two-run triple by junior Lauren Chenausky (Athol, Mass./Athol). Chenausky later scored on an RBI single by sophomore Brooke McGovern (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) to cushion the lead. The Warriors battled back once again and combined for four runs in the fourth and fifth innings to clinch their first win of the afternoon. Junior Meghan Condon allowed just one run on two hits, walked one and struck out seven in four innings of work for the win. Sophomore Amy Torla (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) allowed seven runs, five earned, on 12 hits, walked three and struck out none in the loss.
