RINDGE, N.H. (April 28, 2003) - The Franklin Pierce softball team snapped a ten game losing streak with a 6-0 shutout win over Saint Michael's College in game one, but fell in game two by a slim 3-2 margin in game two to settle with a split in Northeast-10 Conference softball action this afternoon.

Junior Kalene Wotton (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) allowed just two hits in the first two innings of play and then tossed four innings of no hit softball to earn her four-shutout win of the season. Wotton walked one and struck out one to improve to 5-9 on the season.

The Ravens erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth to take the early lead. Juniors Michelle Derochers (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) and Lauren Chenausky (Athol, Mass./Athol) each singled to lead off the inning and put runners on first and second. Classmate Quinn Tremblay (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) then singled in Derochers to open up the scoring.


Freshman Dana Wetzel smacked a three run home run in the win over the Purple Knights

Senior Julie Haight (Fort Montgomery, N.Y./O'Neill) then singled to put runners on first and second once again. Sophomore Jessica Heaney (Greenport, N.Y./Greenport) then knocked in Chenausky with a sacrifice fly to give the Ravens the two run advantage.

With two runners on base, freshman Dana Wetzel (Riverdale, N.J./Pompton Lakes) slammed a three run home run to help put away the Purple Knights for good.

The Ravens tacked on one more run, as Heaney knocked in Chenausky in the top of the seventh to seal the 6-0 victory.

Wetzel finished hitting 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Chenausky followed batting 4-4 with a pair of runs, while Tremblay went 2-4 with a run and an RBI.

Sophomore Heather Chamberlin suffered the loss as she allowed five runs, all earned, on five hits and stuck out one in under an inning of work.

Junior Michelle Derochers went 1-4 with a triple and a run in game two

The Purple Knights recovered from the shutout loss and posted a 3-2 win in game two to split with the Ravens.

Leadoff hitter, Whitney Christmas tripled and scored on a Franklin Pierce throwing error to give the Knights the immediate one-run lead in the bottom of the first.

The Purple Knights continued to do damage in the second as senior Christina Touhey smacked a two run triple to score Waite-Fuller and freshman Sarah Cameron to go up by three runs.

The Ravens mounted a comeback in the top of the third, as Derochers tripled and Chenausky singled to put runners on the corners. With Wetzel up at bat, Chenausky stole second and Derochers stole home to cut the Knights lead to two.

Wetzel then singled in Chenausky to come within a run, but it wasn't enough as the Knights took game two, 3-2.

Derochers hit 1-4 with a triple and a run, while Chenausky hit 1-4 with a run.

Sophomore Amy Torla (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) suffered the loss as she allowed just one earned run on four hits, walked one and struck out three in six innings of work. Freshman Kara Burrage allowed two earned runs on seven hits, walked none and struck out none for the win.
