Clinches Back-to-Back Wins FORT MYERS, FLA. (March 19, 2003) - The Franklin Pierce softball team avenged yesterday's losses with an 8-7 victory over Hillsdale and a 2-0 shutout over the University of Northern Colorado in non-conference softball action at the 2003 Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. this afternoon. With the score knotted 1-1 in the bottom of the first, the Chargers pulled ahead after senior Gretchen Messenger ripped a three run homer to take the three-run lead.
The Ravens responded with four runs in the second and third innings to even the score once again. With both teams tied at five a piece, the Chargers regained the two-run lead in the fifth on two Franklin Pierce fielding errors. The Ravens fought back in the sixth as senior Julie Haight (Fort Montgomery, N.Y./O'Neill) knocked in teammates Brooke McGovern (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) and Meg Welcome (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) and later scored the game winner on a passed ball to seal the 8-7 victory. Haight finished hitting 2-3, including a triple, with a run scored and a pair of RBI, while Michelle Derochers (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) hit a perfect 4-4 with a run and an RBI. The Chargers were led by Messenger, who hit 2-3 with a three run homer. Junior Kalene Wotton (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Reg.) earned the win, as she allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out three in 4.2 innings of work. Freshman Sara Snavely suffered the loss as she allowed two earned runs on three hits, walked three and stuck out none.

The Ravens went on to clinch their second win of the afternoon with a 2-0 shutout over the University of Northern Colorado. The teams were deadlocked until Lauren Chenausky (Athol, Mass./Athol) and Wotton scored what proved to be the game winners in the bottom of the fourth. Haight led off the stanza with a single and advanced to second on a Chenausky bunt single. With Haight in scoring position, Wotton came in to pinch run at second. Derochers advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt and Wotton and Chenausky later scored on a Northern Colorado error for the win. Haight finished hitting 1-3 with a run scored, while Chenausky went 1-2 with a run. Sophomore Christine Boutiette (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) improved to 2-0, allowing just four hits and walking one for the shutout victory. Sophomore Stephani Miller allowed two runs, no earned, on two hits, walked two and struck out three for the loss.
