Remington smacks three-run triple to lead Ravens to victory

FORT MYERS, FLA. (March 20, 2003) - Junior Brooke Remington (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony) knocked a three-run triple in the bottom of the second inning to lead Franklin Pierce to a 4-3 win over Fontbonne College in its final game of the 2003 Gene Cusic Classic this morning.

Freshman Dana Wetzel (Riverdale, N.J./Pompton Lakes) led off the second with a double with sophomore Deanna Jones (Wayside, N.J./Ocean Twp.) following with a single. Jones advanced to second on a steal and classmate Brooke McGovern (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) advanced to first on a walk to load the bases.

With two outs and bases loaded, Remington ripped a long shot over the right fielder's head to score all three runners. In an attempt to tag McGovern at the plate, the ball was overthrown and Remington raced home to make the score 4-0 heading into the top of the third.

Sophomore Courtney Lemoie earned her second win of the season

The Griffins attempted a comeback in the third as junior Stephanie Puzzo stole third and scored on a Franklin Pierce fielding error for the team's first run of the afternoon.

The Griffins tacked on another run moments later when junior Holly Reichel was singled in by sophomore Susan Willick.

Fontbonne came within one run in the fourth when Sherry Simcox knocked in classmate Michelle Tinker, but the Griffins would fail to get any closer.

The Griffins made one last attempt to score in the top of the seventh as sophomore Wendy Saxbury tried to steal second with two outs. As Saxbury took off for second, she was caught by backstop Julie Haight (Fort Montgomery, N.Y./O'Neill), who threw her out to seal the 4-3 victory.

Sophomore Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) earned her second win of the season as she allowed two earned runs on six hits, walked none and struck out two. Junior Kalene Wotton (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Reg.) picked up the save allowing no runs on two hits and striking out one in the final two innings of the game. Senior Lisa Pavolich suffered the loss as she allowed three earned runs on five hits, walked two and struck out five in seven innings of work.
