Franklin Pierce Tops Buffalo State, 3-1
Boutiette records first collegiate win in six-strikeout effort

FORT MYERS, FLA. (March 17, 2003) - The Franklin Pierce softball team recorded its second win of the 2003 Gene Cusic Classic with a 3-1 victory over Buffalo State College in non-conference softball action this afternoon.

The Ravens opened up the scoring early, as junior Quinn Tremblay (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) singled in senior Julie Haight (Fort Montgomery, N.Y./O'Neill) in the top of the first.

Sophomore Jessica Heaney batted 1-2 with an RBI

Franklin Pierce started to slowly pull away from the Bengals in the top of the fourth when junior Lauren Chenausky (Athol, Mass./Athol) led off the inning with a single. Classmate Michelle Derochers (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) also singled and put Chenausky in scoring position.

Freshman Dana Wetzel (Riverdale, N.J./Pompton Lakes) then knocked in Chenausky to give the Ravens the two run lead. Sophomore Jessica Heaney (Greenport, N.Y./Greenport) helped the Ravens take the three-run lead moments later, singling in Derochers to make the score, 3-0.

The Bengals answered later in the stanza, as Janelle Mahl got on base after a controversial call. Mahl was later brought home by teammate Brooke Matheis to give Buffalo State its only run of the game.

Derochers led the offense hitting 2-3 with a run scored. Chenausky went 1-2 with a pair of runs, while Heaney also batted 1-2 with an RBI.

Sophomore hurler, Christine Boutiette (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland), recorded her first collegiate win, as she allowed just one earned run on two hits, walked five and struck out six. Melissa Balsavage suffered the loss allowing three runs, all earned, on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
