Pierce Drops Two at Bentley WALTHAM, MASS. (April 21, 2003) - The Franklin Pierce softball team suffered a 1-0 loss in game one and a 4-2 setback in the nightcap to Bentley College in Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader softball action this afternoon. Senior Tiffany Carnevale tossed a four-hit shutout for her third shutout victory this spring. Carnevale struck out four and walked one in a complete game effort to improve to 6-7 on the season. Junior Kalene Wotton (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) was the only Raven to register multiple hits, as she finished batting 2-for-3. The teams battled through six scoreless frames before Bentley sophomore Lisa Tisbert tripled to left and scored the game winner on RBI triple. Sophomore Amy Torla (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) was the hardluck loser, as she allowed just one earned run on three hits, walked three and struck out four.

The Falcons went on a three run tear in the first and never looked back as they completed the sweep of the Ravens with a 4-2 win in game two. The Ravens led off the first with a slap single from sophomore Meg Welcome (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill), who later scored on a Michelle Derochers (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) single to take the one run lead. Bentley senior Marcie Matthews responded with an RBI single, driving in teammate Lauren Frasier to knot the score 1-1. The Falcons pulled ahead moments later when freshman Christine Comerford belted a two-run single to score Matthews and Tisbert and extend the lead to two runs. The Ravens attempted a comeback in the fourth when junior Lauren Chenausky (Athol, Mass./Athol) singled to left, advanced to third on a Julie Haight (Fort Montgomery, N.Y./Fort Montgomery) double and scored on an RBI single by freshman Dana Wetzel (Riverdale, N.J./Pompton Lakes). All the Ravens could muster was one run, however, as Torla flew out to center to close out the inning. Chenausky finished hitting 2-3 with a run scored, while Wetzel went 2-3 with an RBI. Welcome hit 2-4 with a run. Junior Leah Wesemann allowed two earned runs on nine hits and struck out three to improve to 5-10. Wotton suffered the loss as she allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits, struck out three and walked none in six innings of work.
