Lemoie pitches no-hitter in her first win of the season against NYU

FORT MYERS, FLA. (March 16, 2003) - Sophomore Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) tossed a no-hit shutout to lead the Ravens to their first regular season win, a 9-0 shutout over New York University, in game two of the 2003 Gene Cusic Classic in non-conference softball action this afternoon.

Lemoie walked just one batter and struck out seven in her first career no-hitter. Last season, Lemoie led the pitching staff with three shutout wins.

The Ravens got off to a good start, leading off the first with four straight singles. Senior Julie Haight (Fort Montgomery, N.Y./O'Neill) singled in lead-off hitter, Meghan Welcome (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill), and was later brought home by junior Quinn Tremblay (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Regional). Tremblay later scored on a passed ball to help the Ravens take the early three-run lead.

The Ravens tacked on a run in the second and scored two runs on two NYU errors to take a commanding six-run lead. Freshman Dana Wetzel (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) helped put away the Violets for good, driving in junior Lauren Chenausky (Athol, Mass./Althol) with an RBI double in the top of the fifth.

Welcome finished hitting 2-3 with a run scored, an RBI and three stolen bases. Wetzel went 3-4, including a double, with a pair of runs and two RBI.

New York University hurler, Alissa McConachie allowed six earned runs on 12 hits, walked three and struck out five for the loss.

In game two of the afternoon twinbill, Franklin Pierce suffered a 4-0 loss to top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic University.

The teams were deadlocked until Armstrong Atlantic junior Kissy Stepanova belted a solo shot over the left field fences to help the Pirates claim the one-run advantage.

Armstrong Atlantic junior, Katya Eronina was on her way to pitching a no-hitter until Welcome knocked a single, the Ravens only hit of the game, in the top of the fourth to spoil Eronina's efforts.

Franklin Pierce managed to hold off Armstrong Atlantic through the fourth and fifth innings, but the Pirates scored three-straight runs on three errors to take the 4-0 lead.

Armstrong Atlantic's Stacey Richardson batted 3-4 with a pair of doubles to lead the Pirates offense.

Eronina gave up just one hit and struck out 12 batters for the win, while Franklin Pierce hurler, Kalene Wotton (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Regional), allowed four runs, just one earned, on five hits, walked seven and struck out five for the loss.
