Ravens fall 3-1 in game one, rebound
for 1-0 win in game two
LOWELL, MASS. (April 23, 2002)
- The Franklin Pierce University
softball team dropped
a 3-1 loss to UMass Lowell in game one, but rebounded in
game two to pull off a 1-0 victory in Northeast-10 Conference
softball doubleheader action this afternoon.
The River Hawks were led in game
one by Rebecca Regula, who hit three-for-four with two runs
scored. Amber Gagnon went 2-3 with an RBI.
UML jumped out to the early lead
in the bottom of the first, as Regula drew a bases loaded
walk to help the River Hawks to take the 1-0 lead. FP
answered
in the top of the second was sophomore
Brooke Remington (Bennington,
Vt./Mount Anthony) advanced to first on a walk,
moved to second on a passed ball and was singled in by freshman
Kayla Dejardins (Plainfield, Conn./Plainfield)
to knot the score 1-1.
Gagnon knocked in what proved to
be the gamewinner in the fifth as she singled to left and
sent Regula home to put the River Hawks up by one. Caitlin
Romano then singled in Tabitha Hebert to ice the 3-1 win.
Gagnon allowed one earned run, scattered
three hits, walked three and struck out none in a complete
game effort to improve to 13-5. FPC's Kalene Wotton
(Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) allowed three earned
runs on nine hits, struck out two and walked five in six
innings of work for the loss.

senior tri-captain Shalyn Covey (San Diego, Calif./Claremont)
knocked the gamewinning RBI single in the top of the third
to seal a 1-0 win for the Ravens.
Remington and freshman
Mary Reade (Groveland, Mass./Pentuckett Reg.)
both finished hitting 2-3 in game two.
Junior Carolyn
Hall (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) led off the
third with a single, advanced to second on a Sonja
Johnson (Ashby, Mass./North Middlesex Regional)
single, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Reade and
scored the winning run on the Covey single for the win.
Amy Torla (Haverhill,
Mass./Haverhill) allowed just three hits in seven
innings of work for the shutout win. Hebert allowed one
earned run on eight hits, stuck out three and walked five
despite the loss.
